The choice of agitator is dictated mainly by the type of mixing required, for example heat transfer, gas absorption, or emulsification, the suspension of solid particles in a liquid and the type of material being mixed, for example its viscosity, specific gravity, heat conductivity or size of the suspended particles. Generally, paddle, impeller, and anchor agitators are rotated at lower speeds (up to 150 r.p.m.) than the propeller or turbine type (up to 2900 r.p.m. in smaller vessels). The efficiency of agitation is considerably increased by the use of... [Pg.38]

Physical Properties. Physical properties of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride are summarized in Table 1. Figure 1 shows the vapor pressure and latent heat of vaporization. The specific gravity of the Hquid decreases almost linearly from 1.1 at —40°C to 0.84 at 80°C (4). The specific heat of anhydrous HF is shown in Figure 2 and the heat of solution in Figure 3. [Pg.190]

Properties. Silver difluoride melts at 690°C, bods at 700°C, and has a specific gravity of 4.57. It decomposes in contact with water. Silver difluoride may react violently with organic compounds, quite often after an initial induction period. Provisions must be made to dissipate the heat of the reaction. Small-scale experiments must be mn prior to attempting large-scale reactions. [Pg.235]

Specific gravity is the most critical of the characteristics in Table 3. It is governed by ash content of the material, is the primary deterrninant of bulk density, along with particle size and shape, and is related to specific heat and other thermal properties. Specific gravity governs the porosity or fractional void volume of the waste material, ie. [Pg.53]

Iodine vapor is characterized by the familiar violet color and by its unusually high specific gravity, approximately nine times that of air. The vapor is made up of diatomic molecules at low temperatures at moderately elevated temperatures, dissociation becomes appreciable. The concentration of monoatomic molecules, for example, is 1.4% at 600°C and 101.3 kPa (1 atm) total pressure. Iodine is fluorescent at low pressures and rotates the plane of polarized light when placed in a magnetic field. It is also thermoluminescent, emitting visible light when heated at 500°C or higher. [Pg.360]

The organic iodine compounds have lower heats of formation and greater reactivities than their chloro and bromo analogues. As ia the case of the inorganic iodides, their iadexes of refraction and specific gravities are higher than the corresponding chloro and bromo derivatives (121). [Pg.366]

Chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) has excellent o2one, oil, and heat resistance. In addition chlorinated polyethylene has replaced chloroprene elastomers. CPE has a lower specific gravity than chloroprene compounds and produces compounds that are similar to CR in properties but with lower costs. In addition, due to high levels of chlorine in the polymer, the flame resistance of the compounds of CPE are high. [Pg.233]

Strontium carbonate is a colorless or white crystalline soHd having a rhombic stmcture below 926°C and a hexagonal stmcture above this temperature. It has a specific gravity of 3.70, a melting point of 1497°C at 6 MPa (60 atm), and it decomposes to the oxide on heating at 1340°C. It is insoluble in water but reacts with acids, and is soluble in solutions of ammonium salts. [Pg.474]

Strontium Oxide, Hydroxide, and Peroxide. Strontium oxide, SrO, is a white powder that has a specific gravity of 4.7 and a melting point of 2430°C. It is made by heating strontium carbonate with carbon in an electric furnace, or by heating celestite with carbon and treating the sulfide formed with caustic soda and then calcining the product (10). It reacts with water to form strontium hydroxide [18480-07-4] and is used as the source of strontium peroxide [1314-18-7],... [Pg.475]

General-Purpose Polystyrene. Polystyrene is a high molecular weight M = 2 — 3 x 10 ), crystal-clear thermoplastic that is hard, rigid, and free of odor and taste. Its ease of heat fabrication, thermal stabiUty, low specific gravity, and low cost result in mol dings, extmsions, and films of very low unit cost. In addition, PS materials have excellent thermal and electrical properties that make them useful as low cost insulating materials (see Insulation, ELECTRIC Insulation, thermal). [Pg.505]

Traditionally, sodium dichromate dihydrate is mixed with 66° Bh (specific gravity = 1.84) sulfuric acid in a heavy-walled cast-iron or steel reactor. The mixture is heated externally, and the reactor is provided with a sweep agitator. Water is driven off and the hydrous bisulfate melts at about 160°C. As the temperature is slowly increased, the molten bisulfate provides an excellent heat-transfer medium for melting the chromic acid at 197°C without appreciable decomposition. As soon as the chromic acid melts, the agitator is stopped and the mixture separates into a heavy layer of molten chromic acid and a light layer of molten bisulfate. The chromic acid is tapped and flaked on water cooled roUs to produce the customary commercial form. The bisulfate contains dissolved CrO and soluble and insoluble chromic sulfates. Environmental considerations dictate purification and return of the bisulfate to the treating operation. [Pg.138]

Gold [7440-57-5] Au, is the principal constituent of gold-colored alloys. It contributes gold color kicreases the specific gravity raises the melting pokit, if that of the alloy is below that of gold and kicreases ductihty, maHeabiUty, corrosion, and stain resistance. Gold produces heat-treatable compositions with copper, platinum, and zkic. It is useful ki amounts of 25—100 wt %. [Pg.482]
