Southern activity

The most significant deposits are in southern Nevada, in the Lake Mead area, and in the McDermitt caldera complex on the Nevada—Oregon border. In the McDermitt caldera, lithium probably originated from volcanic sedimentary rocks deposited in the caldera moat. There is evidence that areas of the caldera were hydrothermically active contributing to enrichment of lithium (14). This and other similar deposits are not economically viable as of this writing. These deposits do represent a significant lithium reserve, however, whenever large expansion in demand occurs. 

Chemical charge, Hquor composition, time of heatup, and time at temperature of reaction are all functions of the wood species or species mix being digested and the intended use of the pulp. A typical set of conditions for southern pine chips in the production of bleachable-grade pulp for fine papers is active alkaH, 18% sulfidity, 25% and Hquor-to-wood ratio, 4 1. Time of heatup is 90 min to 170°C time at temperature of reaction, 90 min at 170°C. Hardwoods require less vigorous conditions primarily because of the lower initial lignin content. 

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is in an excavated salt cavern in southern New Mexico, twenty-seven miles from Carlsbad. The WIPP site is 2,000 yards underground, and defense waste is being placed. There are plans to place there about 6 million cubic feet of material there containing fewer than five million curies of radio activity. 

The first reports of plastic in the North Atlantic indicated the presence of 50-12,000 particles/km in the Sargasso Sea in 1972 (52) and from 0-14.1 particles per m in coastal waters of southern New England (42), where the main source was river-borne effluents from plastic fabrication plants (44). Plastic objects discarded from boats and from recreational activities on beaches were the main sources of debris in Narragansett Bay, being deposited at a rate of 9.6 g m of beach front per month (53). During a detailed survey off the southeast coast of the United States (43, 54), fragments of plastic were present in about 70% of the samples collected from the waters of the continental shelf, the continental slope and the Gulf Stream between Florida and Cape Cod, 50% of those from the Caribbean Sea, and 60% of those from the Antilles Current. Since unprocessed plastic was more prevalent in continental shelf waters and fabricated objects were common offshore but rare near land, the authors surmised...

In parts of the world (sub-Sahran African and southern and South-East Asia) the ADDS pandemic is out of control, with no effective chemotherapeutic agents and little prospect of a vaccine the prognoses are bleak for the millions of HIV-infected individuals. Sexual intercourse is now the main mode of infection and if the pandemic is to be contained, sexually active individuals have to be persuaded to reduce the niunbers of their sex partners and to practise safe sex using condoms. 

Cyperus rotundus L. is a weedy species, native to India, but widely distributed in countries on the Pacific Rim and islands in the Pacific Basin. Commonly referred to as purple nut sedge, it has been known in the Hawaiian Islands since the middle of the nineteenth century. In addition to its weedy nature, the taxon has attracted attention because of the antifebrile activity of its rhizomes. Chemical studies have disclosed the presence of several sesquiterpene derivatives, some of which have been implicated in the plant s medicinal use (cyperene and cyperinerol) (Wagner et ah, 1990, p. 1399). Our interest in this species is the existence of several chemotypes with interesting patterns of occurrence involving Pacific Rim countries and several oceanic islands, including the Hawaiian Islands, islands in the southern Pacific, and the Philippines. 

It is also noteworthy that major igneous and hydrothermal activities in the Japanese areas seems likely to have taken place almost at same times as the stress changes. The stress changes occurred at about 22 Ma, 15 Ma, 12 Ma and 8 Ma in the southern part of...
