Differences in alkaloid composition between samples of Z dipetalum from different islands have also been reported (Arslanian et al., 1990). These workers found that a tree from Oahu (anethole/estragole chemotype) lacked thalicitrine [546] (see Fig. 6.5), whereas a tree from Kauai and one from Hawaii (both 2-undecanone/2-tridecanone chemotype) possessed the compound. [Pg.259]

The first stage of the Stuart oil shale project near Gladstone, AustraUa, 6000 t/d (6600 short tons /d), is scheduled to be constmcted by Southern Pacific Petroleum. Einancial assistance from the AustraUan government, consisting of special depreciation incentives and exemption of gasoline taxes equivalent to about U.S. 1.91/m of cmde shale oil ( 12.00/bbl) has been assured (68). [Pg.356]

Cyperus rotundus L. is a weedy species, native to India, but widely distributed in countries on the Pacific Rim and islands in the Pacific Basin. Commonly referred to as purple nut sedge, it has been known in the Hawaiian Islands since the middle of the nineteenth century. In addition to its weedy nature, the taxon has attracted attention because of the antifebrile activity of its rhizomes. Chemical studies have disclosed the presence of several sesquiterpene derivatives, some of which have been implicated in the plant s medicinal use (cyperene and cyperinerol) (Wagner et ah, 1990, p. 1399). Our interest in this species is the existence of several chemotypes with interesting patterns of occurrence involving Pacific Rim countries and several oceanic islands, including the Hawaiian Islands, islands in the southern Pacific, and the Philippines. [Pg.253]

Figure 10. An example of the use of ( Paxs/ °Thxs) to reconstruct past productivity taken from Chase et al. (in press-a). Data is from a core in the Southern Pacific (AESOPS Station 6 at 61° 52.5 S, 169° 58.3 W). The downcore record of ( Pa/ °Th)xs,o indicates an increase in opal productivity centered at 15 ka. This productivity increase is also seen in the records of two other productivity proxies— the opal accumulation and Ba accumulation rates. Downcore records of these sediment constituents are also shown and have been converted from concentrations to accumulation fluxes by normalizing to the known °Thx, flux. Figure 10. February) were selected as representative of the extremely clean conditions of the Southern Hemisphere Marine Boundary Layer. These very clean conditions (NO<3 ppt) correspond to the cleanest conditions under which radical measurements have been taken at ground level in the Southern Pacific Ocean. The two models agree to within 5-10% or less. [Pg.15]

The seasonal cycle of CCN has also been shown to be correlated with that of cloud optical depth in one remote marine area (Boers et al., 1994), and the isotope composition of non-sea salt sulfate over remote regions of the southern Pacific Ocean has been shown to be consistent with a DMS source (Calhoun et al., 1991). [Pg.800]

Dichloromethane is also present in small amounts in seawater. It has been found at up to 2.6 pg/L in coastal waters of the Baltic Sea. Levels up to 0.20 pg/L have been found in North Sea coastal waters. Dichloromethane is generally not detected in open ocean a mean concentration of 2.2 ng/L has been reported in the southern Pacific Ocean (WHO, 1996). [Pg.260]

Table 5-2 presents plutonium levels detected in several surface waters and groundwaters. The Pacific Ocean was sampled for plutonium and Northern Pacific concentrations were, on the average, greater than those detected in the Southern Pacific for both plutonium-239, -240 and plutonium-238 (Miyake and Sugimura 1976). The plutonium content of the particulate matter in three South Carolina estuarine systems was investigated by Hayes et al. (1976). The Neuse and Newport River estuaries received plutonium only through atmospheric fallout the Savannah River estuary received effluent from the Savannah River Plant. Concentrations detected in the three estuaries are comparable. [Pg.104]
