Some studies of sorption of heavy metal ions were conducted in the presence of standard pH buffer solutions. Acetates, phthalates and particularly phosphates present in these buffers significantly affect the adsorption of most anions and some cations. It should be emphasized that the adsorbents act themselves as pH buffers when the solid to liquid ratio is sufficiently high. Therefore additional buffering is usually not necessary. 

Sorption of heavy metal cations, chiefly the topics related to environmental protection, was reviewed by Charlet [45]. An entire recent book [46] is devoted to uptake of metals by metal oxides, clay minerals and more complex systems.

Chitosan, a biopolymer, has attracted considerable attention due to its many physical and chemical properties and due to its many applications inclnding its usage as a material for medical applications, such as artificial skin and immnnosnppressarrt. In addition, resins derived from chitosan have been synthesized and characterized. The chelation and sorption properties of these chitosan-based polymers towards heavy metal ions in aqueous solutions have been investigated by several research groups. Therefore, the aim of this article will be to shed some light on some of these chitosan-derived resins and their application to sorption of heavy metal ions and some anions. 

Due to this fact that the adsorption of heavy metals onto the activated sludge is related to the functional group of the sludge body not to the living condition of it, the dried activated sludge can be used for sorption of heavy metals (Katsou et al, 2012).
