Fig. 3.23 shows pore volume distributions of some commercially important porous materials. Note that zeolites and activated carbon consist predominantly of micropores, whereas alumina and silica have pores mainly in the me.sopore range. Zeolites and active carbons have a sharp peak in pore size distribution, but in the case of the activated carbon also larger pores are present. The wide-pore silica is prepared specially to facilitate internal mass-transfer.

Nonbarbiturates. After the introduction of the barbiturates, there was little progress in the medical treatment of anxiety until meprobamate (Equanil, Miltown) was introduced in 1950. Soon after its introduction, a series of similar medicines entered the market, including carisoprodol (Soma), glutethimide (Doriden), methaqualone (Qaalude, Sopor), methyprylon (Noludar), and ethchlorvynol (Placidyl). Many applications, especially in electrochemistry, rely on the use of expensive and rare metals, like Pt, Li, and rare-earth elements. In the synthesis of micro- and me-soporous materials, costly structure-directing agents are sometimes applied. The reduction of catalyst mass and the prevention of waste formation, for instance by recycling of synthesis additives, are therefore highly topical research issues. The practicability of future technologies based on catalysis will depend on the availability of efficient catalysts composed of abundant elements prepared by robust, preferentially aqueous-based synthesis methods and the reduction of environmental impacts arising from catalyst manufacture.

One approach is to incorporate Lewis acids into, for example, zeolites or me-soporous silicas [141]. For example, incorporation of Sn(IV) into the framework of zeolite beta afforded a heterogeneous water-tolerant Lewis acid [142]. It proved to be an effective catalyst for the intramolecular carbonyl-ene reaction of citronellal to isopulegol [143] (Fig. 2.43) in batch or fixed bed operation. Hydrogenation of the latter affords menthol (Fig. 2.43). 

Mesoporous tin-containing analogues of MCM-41 and tin oxide-modified me-soporous SBA-15 have also been characterized by Mossbauer spectroscopy (162,163). In the first case, the results suggest that tin was incorporated in the structure of the silicate and, in the second, they indicated that two types of supported tin species were formed, depending on the tin content. One would correspond to atomically isolated species stabilized in the wall of the pore and susceptible to reduction to Sn under reductive treatment conditions and the other to large oxide clusters distributed in the external pore structure.

Vycor is a porous silica glass which is widely used as a model structure for the. study of the properties of confined fluids in me.soporous materials. The pores in vycor have an average radius of about 30-35 A (assuming a cylindrical geometry) and are spaced about 200 A apart [2-3]. A literature survey indicates that there are two kinds of (Corning) vycor glasses one type has a specific surface around 100 m /g while the other is characterized by a specific surface around 200 m /g (both values are obtained from N2 adsorption isotherms at 77 K).
