Solvent-based adhesives classification

Lamination (sticking together of layers) of fabric, foam and film, in various combinations, can be performed using latex- and solvent-based or fusible adhesives (see Adhesive classification). In addition, adhesives are sometimes applied from solution or latex for subsequent reactivation by heat during lamination. Acrylic dispersions are the main type of latex-based adhesives used in the laminating industry butadiene rubbers and polyurethanes are also utilized in smaller quantities. The latex-based adhesives are used for aesthetic reasons and also on heat-sensitive or open-structured fabrics. The solvent-based adhesives, for example rubbers and polyurethanes, are used in applications similar to those for latex adhesives. [Pg.36]

This chapter attempts to classify the different adhesives based on a few key points concerning storage. Based on storage criterion, adhesives can be classified into four main groups solvent-based, water-based, hot-melt, and reactive adhesives. These groups mainly differ in their shelf lives and potential hazards. Nonetheless, within such classifications, overlaps are possible. The classification covers high-temperature adhesives, sealants, conductive adhesives, nanocomposite adhesives, primers, solvent-activated adhesives, water-activated adhesives, and hybrid adhesives. [Pg.262]

Due to the existence of different adhesive systems and the potential hazards associated with each system, there are different types of pack ing as well as stor e conditions and shelf fives. Adhesives can be differentiated based on specific criterion and properties. In the literature, one can find various classifications based on the assembly process, delivery form, adhesion mechanism, or application. Within the same adhesive group, the adhesives can be further differentiated based on their physical states or characteristics liquid, paste, or solid (throi viscosity measurements and rheological characterization), and solvent based, water based, or those without volatile content (through solid content measurements).
