Neutralization reactions involving metal hydroxide bases produce a salt and water. CH3COOH is a weak acid (see Table 4-6), and so it is written as formula units. KOH is a strong base (see Table 4-7) and KCH3COO is a soluble salt (solubility guidelines 2 and 3), and so both are written in ionic form. [Pg.155]

The solubility guidelines can be used to design ways of making salts. Suppose that we want to prepare barium sulfate, BaSOq. This substance is opaque to X rays, so it is often used to visualize the intestinal tract. Patients are given a barium cocktail, and then the areas of interest are irradiated. Solubility is a complex phenomenon, and it is not possible to give a complete summary of all of our observations. The following brief summary for solutes in aqueous solutions will be very useful. These generalizations are often called the solubility guidelines. Compounds whose solubility in water is less than about 0.02 mol/L are usually classified as insoluble compounds, whereas those that are more soluble are classified as soluble compounds. Solubility In natural systems, microbes produce emulsifiers that render insoluble matter accessible for degradation.
