Solid scavenging systems

Most kinetic treatments of the photo-oxidation of solid polymers and their stabilization are based on the tacit assumption that the system behaves in the same way as a fluid liquid. Inherent in this approach is the assumption of a completely random distribution of all species such as free radicals, additives and oxidation products. In all cases this assumption may be erroneous and has important consequences which can explain inhibition by the relatively slow radical scavenging processes (reactions 7 and 9) discussed in the previous section. [Pg.55]

Bis(indolyl)nitroethanes are obtained readily in 7-10 min in high yields (70-86%) on fine TLC-grade silica gel (5-40 pm) by Michael reaction of 3-(2 -nitrovinyl) indole with indoles. Lee and Chang (1978) have compared the ability of linear polyethers, crown ethers, and quaternary ammonium compounds to catalyse oxidations with KMn04 under liquid-liquid and liquid-solid conditions. In the presence of acetic acid as a scavenger for the KOH produced, the products of olefin oxidation were carboxylic acids, diones, diols and ketols. We have shown that polymeric micelles constmcted of block copolymers of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEG) and poly(L-asparate) containing the anticancer dmg (adriamycin, ADR) selectively accumulate at solid tumor sites by a passive targeting mechanism. This is likely due to the hydrophilicity of the outer PEG chains and micellar size (<100 nm) that allow selective tissue interactions [17,18].
