Software market

It is indicative of the growing importance of the scientific software market that a major corporation, Bolt Beranek and Newman Inc. (BBN), has recently formed a new business activity called BBN Software Products, focused entirely on developing software for science. BBN Software Products leading software product,... [Pg.23]

Another very broad field in chemistry not adequately covered on the software market is handling of spectral collection. There is, of course, a number of instrument producers that provide spectra handling software for their own instruments and data stations . Unfortunately, their software is mostly neither open for the users to modify it nor documented adequately to take full advantage of it. The worst example of such software does not even allow the user the access to raw data produced by the instrument and offers no possibility to transfer the data to other computers where processing according to users needs can be done. The potential buyers must be aware of such products, especially if they intend to work intensively on their own measured data, what is mainly the case in the R D laboratories. [Pg.81]

Despite the apparent health of the computational chemistry software market, it would be overly optimistic to think that this sector can grow indefinitely. Recently, some of the heavily marketed products have been catching up with the more established programs in terms of the number of papers flowing from them. Some of the early software products, even though they have been regularly updated and enhanced, have experienced an erosion in the number of... [Pg.349]

The competitiveness of the chemistry software market also shows up in the recent mergers and consolidations of vendors as they try to achieve a critical mass and market share. Accretion is one way the software companies struggle to stay competitive in a maturing market. In addition, we see several vendors repositioning their products from narrow applications to become general molecular modeling tools. Programs that started out to do only quantum chemistry now find it necessary to have molecular mechanics and other capabilities to be competitive. [Pg.350]

A CP/M software market thrived, since developers could write a single program that would run on many different computers. Woe be to the computer that lacked CP/M. Even though the TRS-80 used a Z80, it took the efforts of third-party developers to bring CP/M to this machine. For awhile, TRS-80 owners were isolated from the mass market, with a separate, smaller library of software. CP/M was the leader of the eight-bit world, and most small businesses used Z80 CP/M computers. CP/M machines occupied the niche that the IBM PC and PC clones control today. [Pg.23]

A key topic for debate in the near future will be the acceptability of "freeware" software products distributed via the World Wide Web at no cost to the user. The problem with freeware is that it often comes with little or no development documentation and, as such, has an unknown development history. Freeware distributed by what might appear as an altruistic individual may not be what it seems. Before using freeware, a pharmaceutical manufacturer must ensure it does not have any viruses or Trojan horses embedded in it, or that "back doors" exist that hackers could open. Freeware may also be distributed as part of a supplier s marketing ploy. The idea is that users will become familiar with using certain free software packages (e.g., spreadsheets and databases) from a particular supplier and then follow up with purchases from this supplier when other software products are required. This seems set as a new trend in software marketing and includes the provision of electronic services... [Pg.472]

Similarly, AMR Research (www.amrresearch.com) developed the concept of Enterprise Commerce Management (ECM) to attempt to unify the spectrum of enterprise applications and provide technical standards for software vendors to meet for ECM compliance [6], [57]. In this sense, it is not an application users have to buy or a software market in and of itself, but instead provides a blueprint for companies to maximize the benefit they receive from their enterprise providers. ECM is made up of 5 levels information services, integration... [Pg.772]

One possibihty to solve this problem is to develop and propose a global and unique data model covering aU requirements from all users in all sectors and give adequate technical training to industry, but this is not a realistic solution. The huge number of different applications and the divergent interests in the software market will immediately cmsh this possibility. Even if achieved, aU applications would be obliged to adopt it, and none is able to impose that. [Pg.136]

Gates and Allen founded Microsoft in 1975. When IBM entered into a contract with Microsoft to produce the software for the IBM personal computer in 1981, Microsoft began its transformation into the leading software company in the world. Its Windows operating system dominates the operating system market, Microsoft Office dominates the personal productivity software market, Internet Explorer dominates the browser market, and Oudook Express is the leader for e-mail use on personal computers. [Pg.1661]
