Sodium vanadium fluoride

When nitryl fluoride is passed at ambient temperature over molybdenum, potassium, sodium, thorium, uranium or zirconium, glowing or white incandescence occurs. Mild warming is needed to initiate similar reactions of aluminium, cadmium, cobalt, iron, nickel, titanium, tungsten, vanadium or zinc, and 200-300°C for lithium or manganese.

The vendor claims that the following metals have been successfully treated to parts per biUion (ppb) and detection limit levels aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, nickel, selenium, silver, tin, uranium, vanadium, and zinc. The system is also able to remove ammonia, nitrates, phosphates, potassium, fluorides, and sodium. Studies have also been performed using Aqua-Fix to remove radionuchdes such as uranium from waste streams. 

Vanadium(V) fluoride (mp 19 C. bp 47.9 C) is prepared by treating vanadium with fluorine gas in a nickel flow reactor. Prior to use, vanadium(V) fluoride should be distilled over sodium fluoride in a nickel or stainless steel apparatus.113...

When refractory linings are intended to contain moderate to high temperature environments having products of combustion or reaction containing compounds of sodium, lithium, potassium, vanadium and titanium and bromides, fluorides, chlorides, sulfides, phosphates along with the usual CO2, CO, H2, and O2, extreme care must be taken in their design. In these highly corrosive atmospheres, refractories perform differently than they do in clean environments. 

As usually prepared, uranium hexafluoride may he contaminated with other volatile fluorides, and hydrogen fluoride, molybdenum hexafluoride, vanadium oxyfluoride are among the common and objectionable impurities that may be present. Purification is usually achieved by distillation procedures and a considerable amount of useful and practical information on purification procedures has recently become available (24, 62, 81). A procedure for the purification of UFe that has been recently introduced by Gathers el al. (16) involves the formation of a complex compound between uranium hexafluoride and an alkali metal fluoride. Ruff and Heinzelmann (68) first observed complex formation between uranium hexafluoride and sodium or potassium fluoride, and this was confirmed by Martin et al. (69). These reports were received with a certain reserve, because efforts made during World War II to prepare addition compounds of uranium hexafluoride were singularly unsuccessful (41). Nevertheless, complex compounds are indeed formed, according to the reaction... 

Vanadium is determined in the urine without digestion by Zeeman GF-AAS according to the standard addition procedure. Pyroiyticaliy coated graphite tubes are used. In order to reach optimum conditions of atomisation and mineraiisation a mixture of tetrammine-palladium(ll)-nitrate/magnesium nitrate/sodium fluoride is added to the sample.
