Sodium tetraphosphate

Flocculants cause colloidal clay particles to coagulate thus promoting separation from the drilling fluid which has been circulated down the wellbore and returned to the surface. The treated fluid may then be pumped back down the well bore. Sodium chloride, hydrated lime, gypsum, sodium tetraphosphate, polyacrylamide, poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid), cationic polyacrylamides, and poly(ethylene oxide) have been used commercially. 

Thinners and dispersants are used to prevent excessive flocculation of clay particles and maintain pumpability of the fluid. Tannins, various lignosulfonate salts, sodium tetraphosphate and other phosphates, and synthetic polymers such as sodium poly(styrene sulfonate-co-maleic anhydride) have been used. 

In strongly alkaline solution hydrolysis of sodium tetraphosphate takes place so much more slowly than that of the tetrametaphosphate that tetraphosphate accumulates in the solution in a practically pure state...

Further hydrolysis of triphosphate in the usual way then follows as a secondary reaction (61). Cleavage of the middle P—0—P bond to yield two pyrophosphate molecules has been observed in a sodium tetraphosphate oil containing water after it had been dried to a glassy consistency (312).

Sodium tetraphosphate, Na8P4013, and decaphosphate, Na12P10O31, were also said to be among the products obtained by fusing complex metaphosphates with pyrophosphates.12 The acid H8P4013 was crystal. 

Both sodium tetraphosphate and sodium hexametaphosphate are hygroscopic and are unsuitable for formulation into dry powders. Tetrasodium pyrophosphate (TSPP) is now used for specialized purposes only, but its potassium analogue is used in liquids. The combination of TSPP and sodium carbonate was more effective than either ingredient used separately [3, 4]. 

Other work has dealt with improved methods of paper chromatography, by use of which the hydrolysis of sodium tetraphosphate is shown to be more adequately represented by consecutive formation of tri- and pyrophosphate ions than was previously thought, and with a kinetic investigation of the hydrolysis.

A 10 to 15% aqueous solution is prepared from the purified sodium tetrametaphosphate. The solution is cooled to room temperature, and sufficient cold concentrated sodium hydroxide solution to give a final concentration of 8.5 to 10% tetrametaphosphate and a mol ratio of hydroxide to tetrametaphosphate of 3 1 is added. The temperature is not permitted to rise above 40° during this addition. The resulting solution is stored at constant temperature, and aliquots are titrated periodically for excess sodium hydroxide to pH 10.
