Ammonium nitrate NH4NO3, potassium nitrate KNO3, and sodium nitrate NaN03 [Pg.433]

Solid ammonium, potassium and sodium nitrates are white powders. They are highly soluble in water. The solubihty of ammonium nitrate is 1180 g-l at 0 °C and that of ammonium nitrate 921 g-l while that of potassium nitrate is lower, only 133 g-l They are used in nitrogen fertilisers. Ammonium nitrate ranks among the top 20 chemical products in the world. [Pg.433]

Dry or in solution at any concentration, these nitrates have no action on aluminium. [Pg.433]

However, heating should be avoided since it results in evaporation of ammonia, leading to a decrease in the pH towards more acidic values. In order to use aluminium alloys under proper conditions, the pH of solutions of these nitrates should be maintained above 6 by adding ammonia [14]. [Pg.433]

The experience with storage tanks in aluminium alloys for concentrated solutions of ammonium nitrate at 830 g-l shows the very good resistance of alloys 1100, 3003,5052, 5454 and 6061 this also applies to welded zones [15]. [Pg.433]

Sodium nitrate alone does not explode from a strong impact. It burns well in combination with shellac in the weight ratio 10 2, producing transparent liquid drops at the burning surface which consist of mainly sodium nitrite. Sodium nitrate gives an intense yellow light, and latterly has been used for illumination. Especially in combination with magnesium it burns well without producing either cinder or sparks in wide range of the F/0 ratios i.e. the ratio can vary from 3 7 to 8 2. Soda niter or sodium nitrate (NaNO ) is the most abundant of the nitrate minerals. It is used for fertilizer, explosives, and preservatives. The natural deposits are located in northern Chile, which was the original source for many years. Now that we have an idea of the composition of solutions of strong electrolytes, we can move on to consider what happens when we pour one solution into another.
