Soaps household cleaner surfactants

The high viscosity of certain micro emulsions is used for the adhesion of cleaner concentrates on vertical surfaces while on dilution mobile microemulsions are formed [96]. The need for this type of behaviour is especially evident when it comes to household cleaners like toilet bowl cleaners where the formulation needs to be acidic to cope with the special dirt met there, e.g. soap scum. An example of microemulsions with high viscosity for this purpose can be found in [97] which discloses acidic thickened sprayable microemulsion composition based on a balanced mixture of anionic and non-ionic surfactants,...

Anionic surfactants have a negative head and the major ones are sodium alkyl benzene sulfonate, which is used industrially as a cleaner, and sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate which are used in household detergents and toiletries - see Chapter 3. Soap is also an anionic surfactant. Anionic surfactants produce copious suds and are excellent at removing fats and grease. 

The personal care industry remains traditionally the largest consumer of soaps depending on the region, from 50 to 75 % of the total surfactant consumption accounts for soaps [81], The increase in body shampoo consumption last decades is assumed to alter the soap market slightly. The consumption rate of soap in household and laundry aids is quite modest now and limited essentially by the "old times" detergents, foam-control additives, chlorine-containing alkali cleaners, and metal cutting oils. The sodium salts of rosin acids and wool wax acids are of some importance for technical needs and bar soaps.

Sold as bleach cleaners, a genuine new generation of hypochlorite-based products appeared in 1993 on the European household market. They have been introduced in different fragranced versions (eucalyptus type, lemon, lavender) and sold as gel or 2-in-1 products which clean and disinfect. The typical surfactant level may range up to 3% (where amine oxide and soap are quite often used) combined with a sodium hypochlorite content up to about 2%.
