Zinc is also used extensively to galvanize other metals such as iron to prevent corrosion. Zinc oxide is a unique and very useful material for modern civilization. It is widely used in the manufacture of paints, rubber products, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, floor coverings, plastics, printing inks, soap, storage batteries, textiles, electrical equipment, and other products. Commercial Stabilizers. There is a great variety of commercial formulations utilizing the mixture of the alkaU and alkaline-earth metal salts and soaps. In many cases, products are custom formulated to meet the needs of a particular appHcation or customer. The acidic ligands used ia these products vary widely and have dramatic effects on the physical properties of the PVC formulations. The choice of ligands can affect the heat stabiHty, rheology, lubricity, plate-out tendency, clarity, heat sealabiHty, and electrical and mechanical properties of the final products. The final polymerised product is formed in particles much smaller (50-500 nm) than produced with suspension polymerisation. Emulsion polymerisation can lead to rapid production of high molecular weight polymers but the unavoidable occlusion of large quantities of soap adversely affects the electrical insulation properties and the clarity of the polymer. [Pg.28]

Zinc oxide occurs in nature as mineral zincite. It is the most important zinc compound and has numerous industrial applications. Zinc oxide is the pigment in white paints. It is used to make enamels, white printing inks, white glue, opaque glasses, rubber products and floor tiles. It is used in cosmetics, soaps, pharmaceuticals, dental cements, storage batteries, electrical equipment, and piezoelectric devices. Other applications are as a flame retardant, as a UV absorber in plastics, and a reagent in analytical chemistry. A major application of zinc oxide is in the preparation of most zinc salts. In medicine, the compound is used as an antiseptic, an astringent and a topical protectant. [Pg.990]
