Smouldering fires

Recent research has resulted in the development of carbon monoxide detectors. They are most effective in detecting slow smouldering fires where high levels of carbon monoxide are produced before there is any smoke. They are not intended as replacements for smoke detectors but as an addition to the range. [Pg.657]

Smouldering fires can occur in many sites, such as coal-dust storage, com silos or wood-chip silos in chipboard factories. Dusts. Most combustible solids can produce combustible dusts. Combustible dusts are particularly hazardous they have a very high surface area to volume ratio. When finely divided as powders or dusts, solids bum quite differently from the original material in the bulk. Dust and fiber deposits can spread fire across a room or along a ledge or roof beam very quickly. Accumulations of dust can smoulder slowly for long periods, giving little indication that combustion has started until the fire suddenly flares up, possibly when no one suspects a problem. [Pg.102]

Despite the risk of reignition of a solvent fire from smouldering wood, it is on balance safer to store drums on pallets. A stack of palletized drums is more stable, particularly if the ground is at all uneven. Palletized drums are less prone to damage in handling by fork-lift truck than when handled loose, even if specialized drum handling attachments are used and in an emergency pallets can be handled more quickly. Finally, in a bunded area where rainwater may accumulate the base of a drum may be corroded whereas it is rare for a pallet to rot under the same conditions. [Pg.130]

The failure of electrical appliances or fixtures can initiate smouldering, which conld lead to localised fires, snch as are simulated in, for example, DEN EN 60695-11-5 [13], through, for example, flame exposure from a Brmsen burner. All materials employed in electronic equipment operating under electrical load have to be flame retardant. Traditional printed circuit boards utilise epoxy resins retarded by reacting TBBA into the liquid resins before laminate constmction (FR4). To comply with UL94 V-0 specification, the resins contain about 20% of bromine. In case of fire or smouldering, brominated epoxies evolve corrosive decomposition products that can damage the surrounding electronic equipment. This can be avoided by use of phosphoms flame retardants. [Pg.99]
