Material-handling operations

In addition to encompassing all of the unit operations in the plant, the plant flow sheets may also include materials handling operations associated with the transport and storage of materials in and around the mill. Typically, flow sheets provide quantitative information regarding water and slurry flows, toimages, and assays. 

Contaminated feed materials must have a minimum solids content of 60% to facilitate materials handling operations. The vendor advises that the unit has a waste heat value upper limit of approximately 300 British thermal unit (Btu) per pound (Btu/lb). Waste blending or homogenization is recommended as a means to evenly distribute both moisture and Btu content.

The FHA process usually begins with the establishment of a list of system or subsystem functions. Hazards are then postulated on the basis of the failure and/or likelihood of failure of each function. Then, the overall probable effect of the hazard on the system and those operating it (i.e., people) is derived. Once identified, this overall probable effect is known as the failure condition. The severity of the failure condition is assessed and a hazard severity classification is assigned to it. This severity class will determine the maximum allowable probability for each failure condition. In extremely critical systems or operations, such as an elevator braking device/system or materials-handling operations, for example, very low maximum allowable probabilities identified in an FHA will mandate the prohibition of single-point failures. 

Training Users of each kind of materials handling equipment need particular knowledge and skill. Training is essential not only for operators, but also for others involved in or near materials handling operations. They must learn which hazards may exist and how to control the hazards.
