Check the proposed use of skips for compliance with the requirements, and stipulate any special requirements in the safety plan. Liaison with the local authority is desirable, as it may reveal local specific restrictions on the use of skips. Contractual arrangements should be checked to ensure that responsibilities under the Duty of Care Regulations are met. 

Skips must be marked with the name of the supplier, and must be provided with adequate lighting and signage if sited on a public highway. Level ground should be chosen where possible for skip placing, and a safe means of access will be required if tipping into a skip is necessary. Skips must not obstruct planned site traffic routes. 

When used in conjunction with a debris chute, measures such as covers are necessary to ensure that dropped materials do not bounce out or create unacceptable dust levels.

The system is to be qualified under the new regulations for ISI in Swedish nuclear plants, SKIPS, during the spring of 98 and the pre-trials for these qualifications has produced very promising results. 

The next few sections deal with the way these experimental results can be developed into a mathematical system. A reader prepared to accept the second law on faith, and who is interested primarily in applications, may skip section A2.1.4.2 and section A2.1.4.6 and perhaps even A2.1.4.7. and go to the final statement in section A2.1.4.8. 

Some of the concepts that chemists have introduced for the discussion of chemical reactivity are summarized below. Much of this will be common knowledge to readers that have studied chemistry they can easily skip this section. As / didn t have any nitrogen available I skipped this step but I did place one small crystal of iodine into the reaction flask. When the iodine is added the solvent will begin to turn brown. Although this looks like the iodine is just dissolving it would appear from what I have read that this is also caused by the reaction.

It is important in fault tree analysis to consider only the nearest contributing event. There is always a tendency to jump immediately to the details, skipping all of the intermediate events. Some practice is required to gain experience in this technique. 

FIOR Process. In the FIOR process, shown in Figure 5, sized iron ore fines (0.04—12 mm) are dried in a gas-fired rotary dryer. A skip hoist dehvers the dry fines to lock hoppers for pressurizing. The fines pass through four fluidized-bed reactors in series. Reactor 1 preheats the ore to 760°C in a nonreducing atmosphere. Reactors 2, 3, and 4 reduce the ore at 690—780°C. At higher (ca 810°C) temperatures there is a tendency for the beds to defluidize as a result of sticking or hogging of the reduced material.

Another style tries to place process tanks such that those most sensitive to drippage problems and cross-contamination are placed in parts of the in-line layout where they would be least troublesome. The transport system is then programmed to take the work in a nonsequential order, skipping over stations and backtracking in order to complete the plating cycle. The carrying of work over other bars tends to leave salt buildup on the superstmcture of the work bars, and potential contamination of any and all tanks in the line depending on which station the salt buildup eventually drops into.

Bucket elevators, skip hoists, and cranes are used for top feeding of the furnace. Retention and downward flow are controlled by timing of the bottom discharge. Gases are propelled by a blower or by induced draft from a stack or discharge fan. In normal operation, the downward flow of sohds and upward flow of gas are constant with time, maintaining ideal steady-state conditions. 

Skip Hoists These hoists, which operate on a batch rather than continuous principle, are not so widely used as in the past. However, for high lifts and extremely lumpy or hot materials, the skip hoist is still an economical and practical device.

Skipping the pilot-plant saved 1 to 2 million dollars and made it possible for the company to enter the acrylic market a full year ahead of the competition. It was assumed that the savings would be enough to pay for any changes in the production unit that might be needed.
