Skin adhesive

Apply a skin adhesive to the area around the gauze dressing. [Pg.614]

Ethicon, Inc., (Somerville, NJ) vendors Dermabond Topical Skin Adhesive for closing surface or skin type wounds. This material is not intended for internal use. Closure Medical Corporation manufactures the actual adhesive. Ethicon, Inc. is a Johnson Johnson company. Dermabond is chemically 2-octylcyanoacrylate and it cures on contact with water, ethanol and others (i.e., addition polymerization and catalysis by weak bases). For internal tissues, the excessive moisture can overcure cyanoacrylate by saturating its surface with moisture, cause disbondment from the substrate, and render it useless as an adhesive. The cured polymer possesses a hard and brittle consistency. [Pg.81]

Subsequently, cyanoacrylates have been used since the 1970s in Europe for a variety of surgical procedures and more recently in Canada. As a topical skin adhesive, cyanoacrylate enables emergency rooms to close wounds fester and reduces the need for stitches. Although veterinarians have been using-cyanoacrylates for years, the adhesive was not approved by the FDA until 1998 for use in the United States on humans. [Pg.99]

In terms of the system design of TDS, there are three types of system constructions reservoir type, matrix type, and drug-in-adhesive type. In reservoir type and matrix type, pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) is only expected to keep the system on the skin. Hence, the necessary conditions for adhesives are almost the same as those of bandages, namely, well skin adhesiveness and low skin toxicity whereas in drug-in-adhesive type, the drug is incorporated into the adhesive so that the interaction between drugs and the PSA is more critical, as discussed later. [Pg.2925]

Styrene/isoprene/styrene (SIS) block copolymer (styrene isoprene ratio of 15/80 to 30/70 by weight) is a thermoplastic rubber. This copolymer can be changed into a good skin adhesive when it is mixed with tackifiers and oils. The advantage of this adhesive is that it can be coated with hot melt coating process... [Pg.2927]

Gelva [Solutia], TM for a family of acrylic multipolymer products designed for high-performance, pressure-sensitive adhesive applications where skin adhesion, high temperature and/or diffi-cult-to-adhere-to surface are involved. Provided for both solvent and water based grades. [Pg.599]

Some lacerations need to be sutured to close the open areas of the skin or topical skin adhesives are used to bring the edges together. Before suturing, the area must be flushed with copious amounts of normal saline. Sutures remain in place for about 7-10 days before they dissolve or are removed. [Pg.406]

The self-adhesive electrodes are patches wired to the patient through conductive flexible adhesive which holds the electrode in place, tightly against the skin. Adhesive electrodes are shown in Figure 14.6. They are disposable and are applied to the chest before the dehvery of shock. Adhesive electrodes are left in place for reuse in case subsequent shocks are needed. Electrodes are usually applied with both electrodes on the anterior chest as shown in Figure 14.7, or in an anterior-to-posterior position, as shown in Figure 14.8. [Pg.225]
