Single-crystal transmission

With the exception of single-crystal transmission work, most solids are too opaque to permit the conventional use of ultraviolet/visible (UV/VIS) electronic spectroscopy. As a result, such work must be performed through the use of diffuse reflection techniques [8-10]. Important work has been conducted in which UV/VIS spectroscopy has been used to study the reaction pathways of various solid state reactions. Other applications have been made in the fields of color measurement and color matching, areas which can be of considerable importance when applied to the coloring agents used in formulations. [Pg.5]

AH intrinsic germanium metal sold is specified to be N-type with a resistivity of at least 40 H-cm at 25°C or 50 H-cm at 20°C. Germanium metal prepared for use in infrared optics is usuaHy specified to be N-type with a resistivity of 4-40 Hem, to be stress-free and fine annealed, and to have certain minimum transmission (or maximum absorption) characteristics in the 3—5 or 8—12 pm wavelength ranges. Small needle-shaped single crystals were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED) (see Fig. 16-17). The results show that the crystals are elongated along the b-axis, which is the direction of weak intermolecular n-n interactions, and have a well-developed (ab) top surface. It corresponds to the surface of aliphatic tails (direction of weak intermolecular interactions). Infrared optics is a fast growing area in which CVD plays a maj or role, particularly in the manufacture of optical IR windows. 1 The earths atmosphere absorbs much of the infrared radiation but possesses three important bandpasses (wavelengths where the transmission is high) at 1-3 im, 3-5 im and 8-17 pm. Two examples of the application of transmission IR methods will be presented. The first, dealing with the chemisorption of CO on a Pd/S102 catalyst surface. Illustrates the first observation of a local stoichiometric surface species Interconversion process which occurs among chemisorbed CO species at high CO coverages. Evidence for the operation of the local stoichiometric process has been obtained on 75A Pd particles. Summarizing, infrared spectroscopy measures, in principle, force constants of chemical bonds. It is a powerful tool in the identification of adsorbed species and their bonding mode.
