Figures 8 and 9 shows a part of the bending region at low temperature containing the components of Vg (150-160 cm ) and Vs (190-200 cm ). The Vg vibration, IR active in the free molecule, has weak components in the Raman spectrum. According to theoretically calculated Raman intensities, which almost perfectly fit the experimental spectrum, the big component has a very low scattering cross-section [87] and is accidentally degenerate with the b2g component at ca. 188 cm. The IR active components of Vg cause strong absorptions in the IR spectrum even if the crystalline sample used for transmission studies is as thin as 400 pm [107, 109]. It is important to stress that ATR absorbance is strongly affected by the sample/crystal contact. Quantitative results are thus difficult to obtain even if the contact is maintained during the sample rotation that is required to record all four polarized spectra. A reference band that does not show significant dichroism is thus most often used to normalize the polarized absorbances in order to obtain quantitative data. For instance, the 1,410 cm-1 band of PET has often been chosen for that purpose, not only for ATR studies but also for specular reflectance (see below) and even transmission studies when the sample thickness is not uniform. It was shown that an appropriate normalization is possible even if no such reference band is available, by using a combination of two bands with orthogonal dichroism [34]. When performing ATR experiments, one should also make certain that the applied pressure does not create artifacts by affecting the structure of the sample. [Pg.310]

The X-ray images of extended lattice imperfections within the crystal arise fi om variations in beam intensity caused by local distortions of the lattice. Dislocation densities of up to 10 mm can be resolved in transmission studies or ten times this by the reflection technique.
