Silicone modified resins

Topcoats based on fluorocarbon resins [poly(vinylidene fluoride)] produce extremely durable coatings (life to first maintenance > 20 years under most climatic conditions) with excellent color and gloss retention. Like silicone-modified resins they are used for applications where weather resistance is required (e.g., exterior panels on buildings). Because of high prices the importance of these systems is limited. [Pg.259]

In keeping with the global trend, waterbased silicone resins are also commercially available for the coating industry. Some important commercial categories of waterbased silicone resins are primary emulsions, secondary emulsions, and waterborne silicone modified resins. [Pg.132]

Paints made from silicone modified resins have excellent weatherability, with good chemical resistance. Silicone copolymers can withstand most severe weather conditions. They are extensively used for coating of steel coils. [Pg.389]

SiHcone resins provide coatings having outstanding heat resistance and exterior durabiHty. The cost is relatively high but for specialized appHcations these resins are important binders (64). Silicone-modified acryHc and polyester resins provide binders having intermediate durabiHty properties and cost. Fluorinated polymers also exhibit outstanding durabiHty properties. High cost, however, limits appHcabiHty. [Pg.341]

Another specialty area is coil coating, which involves coating metal coils by continuous operation. Modern roller systems afford speeds of up to 200 m/min. Most coils are made of cold-rolled and surface treated steel, aluminum, or alloys of the latter with manganese or magnesium. Coating systems are based on alkyd or acrylic resins, oil-free polyester, silicone-modified polyester or acrylic resin, poly(vinylidene fluoride), or poly(vinyl fluoride). Water-reducible systems, mainly based on acrylic resins, have been developed for aluminum as well as for steel coils [21-24], Drying is carried out by continuous operation in gas- or oil-heated multichamber ovens. [Pg.159]

The properties of silicones can be modified by combination with organic polymers. Block copolymers of poly(organo-siloxanes) and poly(ethers) as well as thermoplastic-modified silicones are industrially important, in addition to silicone combination resins. [Pg.323]

Curing. Curing cycles are primarily determined by the silicone content of the resin [2.139]. A typical cure schedule for a 100% silicone resin is 30 min at 260°C. For 50-80% silicones, satisfactory cures are obtained in 15 min at 220°C. For silicone-modified organic coatings, complete cure can be achieved using ambient or low-bake (< 180°C) cure conditions. [Pg.80]

Compared to a common thixotrope such as fumed silica, pulp provides equivalent viscosity at less than one tenth the weight in a typical epoxy resin. In addition, fluid viscosity is unaffected by further processing (agitation) or aging—in contrast to fumed silica modified resin where viscosity drops and is not fully recovered under similar conditions. Pulp can also provide reinforcement in an adhesive matrix as shown by the significant increase in tensile strength, modulus, and tear strength of both a PVC plastisol adhesive and a silicone sealant on the addition of pulp [137,140]. [Pg.1024]

Bulk properties of coatings can be modified through the introduction of various binding agents [212]. Hydrophobic properties are imparted by organo-silicon, oil-resin, and alkyd binders. Nitrocellulose, vinyl, acrylic, urea, melamine and polyester binders tend to reinforce the hydrophilic properties of the coatings. [Pg.248]
