Metal coil coating

Certain components of domestic appliances are also coated with electrodeposition paints. Two-pack polyurethanes are applied if the dimensions of the parts are too large for the electrodeposition bath. These paints dry at ambient temperature to give films with similar properties to stoving acrylic enamels. Solvent-free powder coatings are also used to coat domestic appliances. Nowadays powder coatings and precoated metal (coil coating) are gaining more importance.

In the coating of continuous metal coils, reverse roller coating is often used. In this technique the web is moving counter to the application roller direction, so that the paint is partly wiped off by the moving coil. Shear leads to better flowout. Another type of reverse roller coating is used for the application of stiff paste fillers to chipboard. Application is by forward roller, but this is immediately followed by a reverse roller, which presses the filler into the board and doctors it smooth. 

Roll coating of paint is the final process in a coil coating line. Roll coating is an economical method to paint large areas of metal with a variety of finishes and to produce a uniform and high-quality coating. The reverse roll procedure for coils is used by the coil coating industry, and allows both sides of the coil to be painted simultaneously.

Granular bed filters are used in ten coil coating plants to remove residual solids from the clarifier effluent, and are considered to be tertiary or advanced wastewater treatment. Chemicals may be added upstream to enhance the solids removal. Pressure filtration is also used in this industry to reduce the solids concentration in clarifier effluent and to remove excess water from the clarifier sludge. Figure 7.4 shows a granular bed filter and Table 7.13 presents the heavy metal removal data of a lime clarification and filtration system. 

Another specialty area is coil coating, which involves coating metal coils by continuous operation. Modern roller systems afford speeds of up to 200 m/min. Most coils are made of cold-rolled and surface treated steel, aluminum, or alloys of the latter with manganese or magnesium. Coating systems are based on alkyd or acrylic resins, oil-free polyester, silicone-modified polyester or acrylic resin, poly(vinylidene fluoride), or poly(vinyl fluoride). Water-reducible systems, mainly based on acrylic resins, have been developed for aluminum as well as for steel coils [21-24], Drying is carried out by continuous operation in gas- or oil-heated multichamber ovens. 

The layers are heated to 280°C or higher for a few seconds up to several minutes. The coated metal coils are then processed, i.e., deformed, profiled, or stamped. The resulting coated products are broad in scope they are employed in a variety of areas from packaging and the vehicle industry to household items and building materials. 

Surface Coatings. Melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resins are used for surface coatings in automotive applications, for metal containers, for metal furniture, for coil coatings and for electric appliances.
