Silicone, fluids resins

A common feature of all these compounds is their tetrahedral structure at the silicon atom which is bound to four oxygen neighbors. A tremendous breakthrough in the history of silicon-based polymers has been achieved by the invention of the Direct Process by Muller and Rochow resulting in the industrial production of methyl chlorosilanes with hydrolytically stable Si-C bonds besides very reactive Si-Cl bonds which serve as building units for a wide variety of polydimethyl siloxanes including silicon fluids, resins, and elastomers. [Pg.589]

History. Silicone fluids, resins, and elastomers have been in use for over 50 years, originating with the discovery by E Rochow (GE Company) in 1940 in what was designated as the direst process in which elemental silicon was obtained by the reduction of silicon dioxide in an electric fiimace. The resultant sihcon was then pulverized and reacted with gaseous methyl chloride in the presence of a copper catalyst. [Pg.158]

Silicone fluids containing Si—H groups are also used for paper treatment. The paper is immersed in a solution or dilute emulsion of the polymer containing either a zinc salt or organo-tin compound. The paper is then air-dried and heated for two minutes at 80°C to cure the resin. The treated paper has a measure of water repellency and in addition some anti-adhesive properties. [Pg.827]

The chemistry of silicone halides was recently reviewed by Collins.13 The primary use for SiCU is in the manufacturing of fumed silica, but it is also used in the manufacture of polycrystalline silicon for the semiconductor industry. It is also commonly used in the synthesis of silicate esters. T richlorosilane (another important product of the reaction of silicon or silicon alloys with chlorine) is primarily used in the manufacture of semiconductor-grade silicon, and in the synthesis of organotrichlorosilane by the hydrosilylation reactions. The silicon halohydrides are particularly useful intermediate chemicals because of their ability to add to alkenes, allowing the production of a broad range of alkyl- and functional alkyltrihalosilanes. These alkylsilanes have important commercial value as monomers, and are also used in the production of silicon fluids and resins. On the other hand, trichlorosilane is a basic precursor to the synthesis of functional silsesquioxanes and other highly branched siloxane structures. [Pg.653]

In the category of silicone coatings used for surface modification of the specific substrates, functional silicone fluids are often used, which can selectively interact with the chemical groups of the substrate, thus modifying its surface properties. The use of functional silicones in the textile industry has been discussed in a number of recent publications.5 421 422 The use of different types of high-performace silicone-coated textiles, which include elastomers and resins, has recently been reviewed.423 The use of functional silicones in personal-care products, for example, in shampoos and hair conditioners, mentioned before,381 provides another well-known example. [Pg.676]

Metal hydroxides in combination with various silicon-containing compounds have been used to reduce the amount of additive required to achieve a required level of flame retardancy in a variety of polymeric materials, including polyolefins.62-63 Systems that have been used contain a combination of reactive silicone polymers, a linear silicone fluid or gum, and a silicone resin, which is soluble in the fluid, in addition to a metal soap, in particular magnesium stearate. However, there is little insight given into how these formulations work. [Pg.176]

The linear silicone fluids consists of D units. Silicone elastomers and rubbers are composed of D units bearing as side-chain or end-chain cross-linkable functional groups (vinyl, silanol). Highly branched silicone resins combine T units and D units and in other cases Q and M units. In this way a very great variety of products with a broad application range is obtained. [Pg.737]

Presently thousands of different industrial products have been developed. They include fluids, resins, and rubbers of different formulations which are used in various industries and in our daily life. It is not the object of this article to enter into the detail of various aspects of synthesis, production, grades, properties, applications of all silicone derivatives because many of them are not directly linked to cationic synthesis processes. Most of the information may be found in excellent fundamental books and reviews covering silicones. [Pg.738]

This reaction, catalyzed by uv radiation, peroxides, and some metal catalysts, eg, platinum, led to the production of a broad range of alkyl and functional alkyl trihalosilanes. These alkylsilanes have important commercial value as monomers and are also used in the production of silicon fluids and resins. Additional information on the chemistry of silicon halides is available (19,21—24). [Pg.19]
