Silicates, laundry detergents

A powdered soap-based laundry detergent contains 44% tallow soap, 18% sodium salt of a-sulfonated 1 1 methyl stearate-methyl palmitate mixture, 9% sodium silicate, 10% Na2S04, 2.5% ethoxylated cocoethanolamide, 1.4 cellulose, 0.2% fluorescent whitener, 0.7% enzyme, 0.5% perfume, and 5% water [77]. [Pg.488]

Note Use laundry detergent, unbuilt in conjunction with laundry builder, silicated (both linen and industrial) at 1 part bw detergent to 2-4 parts builder solution. [Pg.129]

Soluble silicates have been widely used in laundry detergents for many years. A comprehensive review of their properties and their utility as detergent ingredients up to 1952 can be found in the last ACS Monograph on soluble silicates ( 1). [Pg.271]

Washing machines currently on the market are constructed almost exclusively with drums and laundry tubs of corrosion-resistant stainless steel or with an enameled finish that is inert to alkaline wash liquors. Nevertheless, various machine components are made of less detergent resistant metals or alloys. To prevent corrosion of these parts, modern detergents contain corrosion inhibitors in the form of sodium silicate. The colloidal silicate that is present, deposits as a thin, inert layer on metallic surfaces, thereby protecting them from attack by alkali. [Pg.92]

Household detergents (laundry and dishwashing) containing sodium silicates or sodium carbonate. [Pg.468]

Other sources of contamination in sewage waters which increase the content of soluble and insoluble substances of both inorganic and organic origin are the constituents of washing agents and detergents from laundries and bathrooms, soaps, tensides, phosphates, carbonates, silicates, and the like,... [Pg.217]

Silicates are often used to protect bleaches such as iso-cyanuric acid ( 3) from unwanted reactions. Bleaches are widely used in European detergents and domestic laundry aids. One patent (23) claims that sodium percarbonate particles sprayed with a silicic acid sol have a longer shelf life than untreated particles in detergents. It appears likely that some protective action is due to silicate - heavy metal interactions. [Pg.274]

Corrosion Inhibitors The basicity and reactivity of ingredients found in laundry formulations lead to attack and corrosion of various metal parts in laundry equipment. To minimize this effect, the sodium silicates are added to the detergent formulation. [Pg.218]
