Side load

The section illustrated in Figs. 15.24 and 15.25 was removed from the door frame that supports the side-loading door to the furnace (Fig. 15.26). Failures of this type had been a chronic problem in the door frame area. The section had been fabricated by welding together three steel plates of to % in. (1.3 to 1.9 cm) thickness. [Pg.350]

Agahi, R. R., Ershaghi, B., Leonhard, M., and Ispas, I., Side Load Effeet on Turbomaehines with Aetive Magnetie Bearings, ICMB, Zurieh, Switzerland, August 1994. [Pg.82]

Turbomaehinery bearing systems are normally designed for radial loads eorresponding to the weight of the rotor. Non-uniform pressure distribution around the wheel(s) of a turbomaehine may also eontri-bute to the magnitude of gas dynamie radial load, oeeasionally ealled side load. The sourees of gas dynamie radial loads on the eom-pressor wheel are different from those at the expander wheel. [Pg.482]

The bearing of top and bottom driven filters, that supports the rotating plate stack and its sealing, is complex since it has to withstand the internal pressure and the side forces imposed by the mechanical drive. However, side loads on some machines are eliminated by the use of hydraulic motors. [Pg.196]

All operating parameters must be considered to make certain that an acceptable operating compressor and process fit exists. The key parameter must be evaluated as part of an overall operating analysis and considered independently. Peters 2 points out that the API Specification 617, the ASME codes, and other applicable codes may require some modification when applied to side load compressors. [Pg.511]

Long, slim piston rods may buckle if subjected to too heavy a push load. Table 40.4 suggests the minimum diameter piston rod to use under various conditions of load and unsupported rod length. It should be used in accordance with the instmctions in the next paragraph. There must be no side load or bending stress at any point along the piston rod. [Pg.608]

Other forces, such as the side-load created by V-belt drives, also generate unique frequencies or modify existing component frequencies. For example, excessive belt tension increases the side-load on the machine-train s shafts. This increase in side-load changes the load zone in the machine s bearings. The result of this change is a marked increase in the amplitude at the outer-race rotational frequency of the bearings. [Pg.670]

Electric motors are not designed to absorb side loads, such as those induced by V-belt drives. In applications where V-belts or other radial loads are placed on the motor, the primary radial transducer (X-axis) should be oriented opposite the direction of induced load and the secondary radial (Y-axis) point should be positioned at 90° in the direction of rotation. If, for safety reasons, the primary transducer cannot be positioned opposite the induced load, the two radial transducers should be placed at 45° on either side of the load plane created by the side load. [Pg.723]

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has developed a standard that specifies minimum pulley diameters that should be used on electric motors. Since motor bearings are specified using a relatively small maximum overhung load, minimum pulley diameters can have a dramatic effect on motor bearings. The increase in tension that is created by smaller pulleys can transmit a potentially destructive side-load on the bearings. [Pg.972]

The stack was constructed of an inner liner of hrick shrouded hy a concrete outer shell constructed of reinforced steel and concrete. The hrick and mortar liner had no reinforcing steel to support the assembly from side loading. The concrete shroud was primarily for protection against wind. A space of a few feet existed between the wall of the brick liner and the outer concrete shroud. The brick wall was about 3 to 4 feet thick at the bottom, and the wall thickness lessened with height. The concrete portion was of a similar design. [Pg.347]

It is therefore important to determine how the volume of the mixture varies with pressure and temperature if the system exists in the gel state. Because of the low Young s modulus in rubber gels, no strongly anisotropic tension distribution can exist. The volume dependence can therefore be determined by one-sided loading and deformation, as can be applied in a hydraulic press. The compressibility can be obtained from one-sided deformation without determining the other coefficients of elasticity. [Pg.134]

Side load case packers are generally used for packing cartoned products into corrugated cases (although tubes, cans, and other containers may be packed in this manner). However, for oil, side loaded case packers could increase the stress of handling the product, which may result in product damage. [Pg.2664]

There are many different methods of sample preparation. Most of the sample holders contain a cavity into which the powder sample is filled, usually from the top. However, the side-loading (also referred to as side-drift) method is considered the best packing method. Unfortunately, many commercial sample holders do not permit sample filling by this method. As a result, holders have been specially fabricated for this purpose. Since organic compounds predominantly consist of atoms with low atomic numbers, there will be significant penetration of X-rays. This can result in peak displacement as well as broadening. Detailed information on sample preparation is available in the literature. ... [Pg.4114]

If land transportation, this can involve road vehicles, end loading, side loading, with hydraulic tailboards or hoists, or on board cranes with varying degrees of protection. If the rail system, then container or package usually in a closed vehicle. [Pg.406]

Samples are usually placed in a sample holder that uses a depression or cavity to mount the sample. These mounts are commonly made of aluminum, bronze, Bakelite, glass, or Lucitc. Cavity mounts arc most commonly side loaded or back loaded. A frosted glass surface, ceramic, or cardboard is placed over the front, and the sample is carefully added via the open side or back. Top-loading ntoiinis are also available as are special mounts known us zero background mounts. Alternatively, a specimen may be mixed with a suitable non crystalline binder and molded into an appropriate shape. [Pg.327]
