Short-rotation system

Alternatively, short-rotation hybrid poplar and selected grasses can be multicropped on an energy plantation in the U.S. Northwest and harvested for conversion to Hquid transportation fuels and cogenerated power for on-site use in a centrally located conversion plant. The salable products are Hquid biofuels and surplus steam and electric power. This type of design may be especially useful for larger land-based systems. [Pg.36]

Magnitude of Relaxation Times. The relaxation times are such that very short-lived systems (e.g., transition states in chemical reactions) cannot be seen in NMR. NMR can detect species whose lifetime exceeds 1 ps. A tremendous advantage of work in solutions is that the rotational relaxation times (typically 1 (is to ns) average in three dimensions the... [Pg.722]

It was concluded from this detailed analysis of an IBPCS consisting of a short-rotation hardwood energy plantation, a wood chip-fueled power plant, a microalgal wastewater treatment pond, and an anaerobic digestion unit for SNG production that the effluents and by-products from one system component can be beneficially used by other components and lead to increased energy conversion efficiencies and energy recovery at lower costs. [Pg.561]

Another example of the importance of the work force to JIT is the need to cross-train workers. Cross-training is when workers are trained to do more than one job. A cross-trained worker can help someone at the next workstation if that worker falls behind and a cross-trained worker understands what the quality requirements are of those processes that the worker is feeding. A cross-trained work force is flexible. It is possible for the workers to move to where they are needed and to respond on short notice. Job rotation is one method companies use to ensure that workers retain their training skills. A firm may set up a job rotation system where an employee routinely rotates between 3 different jobs to ensure that his/her skills remain sharp. [Pg.146]

The number of unsaturated bonds can be determined by a titration with a standard solution of bromine dissolved in glacial acetic acid. The sample is also dissolved in glacial acetic acid to which sodium and ammonium acetate are added, so as to give a final concentration of 0-5 and OT M respectively. The cathodic current of bromine is measured with a short circuit system using a rotating platinum indicator, and a calomel or chloranil reference electrode at the potential of the reference electrode. Several unsaturated open chain compounds and terpenes have been titrated in this way.( ) Other modifications of this technique have been used to determine the amount of unsaturation in fats in methanolic solutions. The standard solution of bromine is prepared in methanol, saturated with sodium bromide, and the methylester of stearic acid is added to suppress the maxima. If the methanolic solution is acidified, OT M potassium bromate with OT M sodium bromide can be used instead of bromine. The bromine generated in homogeneous solution can be used to analyse xylenol and cresol fractions of coal-tars. Other phenolic compounds may be similarly determined. The method was used for the determination of small concentrations of styrene... [Pg.163]

The main biomass crops are Short Rotation Coppice (mainly willow) and Miscanthus grown for pellets, billets or chips for use mainly in co-fired power stations where they are burnt with coal, or in domestic or community heating systems. Crop wastes such as straw can be burnt in on-farm boilers to provide heating for grain drying. [Pg.389]

In order for the resulting equation and therefore Eq.(7.19) to hold we must require microreversibility, i.e. the inversion t - t does not affect the result of the ensemble averaging. But here we rely on the time reversibility of the microscopic equations of motion (at least for short times). This also is the reason for the requirements expressed in Eq. (7.20). In order for the time reversibility to hold, the Lorentz force, which is proportional to df/dt x B, must be invariant as well as the Coriolis force, proportional to dr/dt x cD, in the case of a rotating system. Therefore the magnetic field, B, and the angular velocity, u>, appear with reversed signs on the right side of Eq.(7.20). [Pg.245]
