Wood characteristics

Wood Quality. The relative number of thin-walled and thick-walled fibers in softwoods and hardwoods, and the vessel size and number in hardwoods, have a major impact on wood characteristics that often dictate the wood s end use. Such characteristics include the mechanical properties of wood, the type of surface resulting from wood machining, the permeability of wood to liquids and gases, wood weatherability, and perhaps others. In essence, the types and pro-... [Pg.17]

Macrodistribution. The ability of any wood preservative to control biodegradation is affected by the macrodistribution of the chemical within the wood product being protected. The macrodistribution of a preservative is influenced by three basic factors wood characteristics, treating process, and characteristics of the treating solution. Consideration of the principles of flow in wood and of the factors that influence the treatment of wood are covered in Chapters 3 and 4 14, 15). Suffice it to say that when the preservative has been distributed through the wood, fixation will occur either through chemical interaction between the preservative and the wood structure, between the preservative components themselves, or by physical deposition as a result of solvent loss. These fixation mechanisms are covered in the section on microdistribution. [Pg.311]

Context is everything. It informs, clothes and gives shape to the simplest idea. In isolation wood quality has little meaning only where set against a particular set of end use requirements is it possible to categorize the desired wood characteristics and properties that a particular product needs. [Pg.121]

The paradox is that while industry may seek improved product specifications, the delivery requires attention at a more fundamental level in the selection for improved wood characteristics and properties. Selection implies choice and a focus on only a few characteristics. But first, one needs to understand how these key characteristics and properties relate to one another. [Pg.124]

Mulberry woody biomass production is based on leaf/stem ratios (Babu et al., 2012). Wood characteristics were obtained from literature data (Guha and Reddy, 2013 Lu et al., 2009). As for the case of eucalyptus, we assumed wood is left to dry until equilibrium moisture content is reached. [Pg.263]

Since wood is strong, durable, and noncombustible compared to other materials of biological origin, and is also renewable, a large amount of it is used for construction materials. In that case, the density of wood, which is closely related to many mechanical properties, is important as an indicator of wood characteristics. [Pg.856]
