Alternatively, short-rotation hybrid poplar and selected grasses can be multicropped on an energy plantation in the U.S. Northwest and harvested for conversion to Hquid transportation fuels and cogenerated power for on-site use in a centrally located conversion plant. The salable products are Hquid biofuels and surplus steam and electric power. This type of design may be especially useful for larger land-based systems. 

Because of increased emphasis on maximizing cogenerated power, newer plants are trying to utilize back-pressure turbines only in applications where efficiencies above 70% can be attained. This typically means limiting the applications to the large (>1000 kW) drives, and usiag small machines only where they are necessary for the safe shutdown of the unit. A schematic of a monolith catalyst is shown in Fig. 19-18a. In cases where pressure drop is limiting, such as for CO oxidation in cogeneration power plant exhausts, monolith catalyst panels may be stacked to form a thin (3- to 4-in-thick) wall. The other dimensions of the wall can be on the order of 35 x 40 ft. CO conversion is over 90 percent with a pressure drop across the catalyst of 1.5 in of water. Alternatively, the monolith may be used as a catalyst and filter, as is the case for a diesel particulate filter. The efficiency of seawater desalination plants is low, 10—25% as compared with the efficiency of other major industrial plants [7]. For example, the efficiency of cogeneration power generating plants is 50%. The efficiency of small desalination plants such as used on ships is in the low range. The energy consumption of the wind-powered 140,000 m /day SWRO plant in Perth is 3.56 kWh/m [38]. Using the same feed and outlet conditions, the minimum work consumed is 0.951 kWh/m. Hence, the second law efficiency of the plant is about 26.7% [7]. The SWRO plant efficiency would increase if the plant energy consumption of2.2 kWh/m is achieved [5].
