All projects benefit from scientific peer review when done well, and these reviews keep the skills of scientists and engineers sharp. Reviews also provide an important function in assuring that scientists within dedicated institutions stay in touch with the external community. Within DoD CBD laboratories, there was a noticeable lack of connectivity to research in other institutions and an independent review process, especially in the critical research phase.

The ability of a nltro group in the substrate to bring about electron-transfer free radical chain nucleophilic subsdnidon fSpj li at a saniratedcarbon atom is well documented. Such electron transfer reacdons are one of the characterisdc feanires of nltro compounds. Komblum and Russell have established ihe Spj l reaction independently the details of the early history have been well reviewed by them. The reacdon of -nitrobenzyl chloride v/ith a salt of nitro ilkane is in sharp contrast to the general behavior of the ilkyladon of the carbanions derived from nitro ilkanes here, carbon ilkyladon is predominant. The carbon ilkyladon process proceeds via a chain reacdon involving anion radicals and free radicals, as shovmin Eq. 5.24 and Scheme 5.4 fSpj l reacdoni. 

Sharp corner As reviewed, and never to many times, when a drawing does not show a radius, the tendency is for the toolmaker while manufacturing a mold to leave the intersecting machined or ground surfaces as they are generated by the machine tool. The result is a sharp comer on the molded product. Such sharp comers on the insides of products are the most frequent property detractors.

The needle stick log will help both employees and employers track all needle sticks to help identify problem areas. The log must be maintained to protect the confidentiality of the injured employee. In addition, employers must have a written Exposure Control Plan that is updated annually. During the annual review, inquiries must be made about new or prospective safer options. If new safer devices are available, they should be adopted for use in the agency. The new guidelines will help reduce needle stick injuries among health care workers and others who handle medical sharps. Safety engineered devices such as self-sheathing needles and needleless systems can be used.

This chapter, however, does not deal with above-mentioned reactions of sulfoxides. Rather it is limited to asymmetric synthesis using a-sulfinyl carbanions and -unsaturated sulfoxides, specifically in which the stereogenic sulfoxide sulfur atom is enantiomerically pure. Therefore reactions of racemic sulfoxides are for the most part excluded from this review. For more general discussions, the reader is referred to other chapters in this volume and to other reviews on the chemistry of sulfoxides. Especially useful are the reviews by Johnson and Sharp and by Mislow in the late 1960s and by Oae and by Nudelman as well as a book by Block . A review by Cinquini, Cozzi and Montanari" through mid-1983 summarizes the chemistry and stereochemistry of optically active sulfoxides. This chapter emphasizes results reported from 1984 through mid-1986.

Figure 6.1 Tracking the incidence of cocaine overdose deaths in Dade County, FL. Medicolegal investigations of the deaths were conducted by forensic pathologists. Forensic pathologists evaluated the scene environment and circumstances of death and autopsied the victim in order to determine the cause and manner of death. The circumstances of death and toxicology results were reviewed before classifying a death due to cocaine toxicity with or without preterminal delirium. There was a sharp increase in the incidence of cocaine-related and cocaine overdose cases with the arrival of crack cocaine in Dade County. The incidence of cocaine delirium victims is shown by year, from the first report in 1982.

On the surfaces of polished metallic glasses, very sharp, distinct offsets are observed at room temperature, indicating large and highly localized deformation that must be associated with the propagation of dislocations (Pampillo, 1972). The experimental observations have been reviewed by Li (1976). 

MWNTs favored the detection of insecticide from 1.5 to 80 nM with a detection limit of InM at an inhibition of 10% (Fig. 2.7). Bucur et al. [58] employed two kinds of AChE, wild type Drosophila melanogaster and a mutant E69W, for the pesticide detection using flow injection analysis. Mutant AChE showed lower detection limit (1 X 10-7 M) than the wild type (1 X 10 6 M) for omethoate. An amperometric FIA biosensor was reported by immobilizing OPH on aminopropyl control pore glass beads [27], The amperometric response of the biosensor was linear up to 120 and 140 pM for paraoxon and methyl-parathion, respectively, with a detection limit of 20 nM (for both the pesticides). Neufeld et al. [59] reported a sensitive, rapid, small, and inexpensive amperometric microflow injection electrochemical biosensor for the identification and quantification of dimethyl 2,2 -dichlorovinyl phosphate (DDVP) on the spot. The electrochemical cell was made up of a screen-printed electrode covered with an enzymatic membrane and combined with a flow cell and computer-controlled potentiostat.
