The supporting information of Gagosz contains a detailed discussion of several different mechanistic possibilities, including two pathways not based on dual activation, but those two pathways could be excluded by the results of the labeling studies. 

In 2012, Zhang and coworkers published an intermolecular version of Gagosz s alkyne-homodimerization. This paper did not provide new mechanistic insights but focused on the synthetic aspects of that chemistry [35].
