Sensorineural hearing loss

Auditory Sensorineural hearing loss due to sickling in cochlear vasculature with hair cell damage... [Pg.1008]

Ototoxicity has rarely been attributed to antithyroid drugs (13). In one case progressive bilateral sensorineural hearing loss attributed to propylthiouracil was associated with myeloperoxidase-antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (MPO-ANCA) (14). [Pg.336]

It is well recognized that antithyroid drugs, and especially propylthiouracil, can be associated with development of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-positive vasculitis, often manifesting as renal disease. Atypical presentations, with pyoderma gangrenosum (49) and progressive bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (50), have been described in separate case reports of subjects taking propylthiouracil. [Pg.349]

A 47-year-old intravenous opiate user, after a period of abstinence, injected about 0.25 g of illicit diamorphine during a period of 24 hours and developed bilateral symmetrical sensorineural hearing loss, ear fullness, and loud tinnitus 20 minutes later. His symptoms gradually subsided with no sequelae after 3 weeks. [Pg.546]

A 27-year-old glue sniffing woman developed sensorineural hearing loss, optic atrophy, and global brain damage (27). [Pg.618]

The most serious toxicity of erythromycin involves cholestatic hepatitis, which occurs mainly in adults and only when the estolate preparation of erythromycin is used. Mild allergic reactions such as urticaria and other rashes, fever, and eosinophilia have occurred occasionally after erythromycin use. Sensorineural hearing loss, although extremely rare, has been reported after the use of large doses of erythromycin or the use of erythromycin in the presence of renal lailure. The hearing loss usually improves gradually on discontinuation of the drug. Concurrent use of macrolides and theophylline has been associated with increases in the serum concentrations of theophylline. [Pg.192]

A 1992 survey of otolaryngologists revealed that 80% believed that the risk of sensorineural hearing loss resulting from otitis media was higher than the risk of sensorineural hearing loss from using an ototopical agent known to be ototoxic. As McCabe noted in his editorial comment ... [Pg.2484]

Sensorineural hearing loss has been attributed to azithromycin (23). [Pg.390]

A 35-year old Caucasian man with AIDS and multiple opportunistic infections, including Mycobacterium kansasii and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease developed moderate to severe primary sensorineural hearing loss after 4—5 months of therapy with oral azithromycin 500 mg/day. Other medications included ethambutol, isoniazid, rifabutin, ciprofloxacin, co-trimoxazole, fluconazole, zidovudine (later switched to stavudine), lamivudine, indinavir, methadone, mod-ified-release oral morphine, pseudoephedrine, diphenhydramine, megestrol acetate, trazodone, sorbitol, salbutamol by metered-dose inhaler and nebulizer, ipratropium, and oral morphine solution as needed. Significant improvement of the hearing impairment was documented 3 weeks after drug withdrawal. [Pg.390]

Low-dose exposure to azithromycin has been associated with irreversible sensorineural hearing loss in otherwise healthy subjects (25). Even a single oral dose of azithromycin altered the conjunctival bacterial flora of children from a trachoma endemic area (26). However, the clinical significance is not yet clear. [Pg.390]

Serious adverse effects of aminobisphosphonates were reported in otospongiosis. Of two patients with stapedial otosclerosis and sensorineural hearing loss one developed total bilateral deafness and the other retained minimal auditory function in the low frequencies (25). It was recommended that sensorineural deafness in selected patients with otosclerosis should be treated with sodium fluoride, and that patients with Paget s disease treated with aminobisphosphonates should be closely monitored and the drug discontinued immediately if hearing deteriorates. Elsewhere, ototoxicity has been reported (SEDA-20, 440). [Pg.524]
