Selection mechanism

The selection function is used to choo.se chromosomes which can then mate and thus give their coded information to the next generation. The idea behind the selection mechanism is to obtain more copies of better chromosomes in the next generation.

Sintered sihcon carbide retains its strength at elevated temperatures and shows excellent time-dependent properties such as creep and slow crack growth resistance. Reaction-bonded SiC, because of the presence of free sihcon in its microstmcture, exhibits slightly inferior elevated temperature properties as compared to sintered sihcon carbide. Multidimensional chromatography brings together separations often based on different selectivity mechanisms. Although the forms of the mobile phase are not required to be different in the individual steps of a multidimensional separation, we usually strive to achieve orthogonal selectivity of these individual separation steps (1).

Gault and coworkers [ 149] have observed that the distribution of products obtained by hydrogenolysis and isomerization of methylcyclopentane was the same as those obtained with hexane. They proposed two competing mechanisms a selective mechanism implying an a, a, p, j0-tetra-adsorbed species and a non-selective mechanism implying coordinated olefin and bis-carbene intermediates (Scheme 38). 

The two techniques differ in that HDC employs a nonporous stationary phase. Separation is affected as a result of particles of different size sampling different velocities in the interstitial spaces. Size exclusion chromatography is accomplished by superimposing a steric selection mechanism which results from the use of a porous bed. The pore sizes may vary over a wide range and the separation occurs as a result of essentially the same processes present in the gel permeation chromatography of macromolecules.
