A user approval process should assure that field equipment has an established history of performance in a similar operating environment and that its failure mechanisms are understood and accounted for in the design, operation, and mechanical integrity practices. ISA-TR84.00.04-1 Annex L provides guidance on the selection of SIF devices. An SIS must be sufficiently robust to meet the required SIL under operating environment conditions. For each installation, define the conditions that impact SIS equipment selection, such as ... [Pg.24]

The shell may be of metal (steel, alloy, or non-ferrous), plastic, wood or some combination which may require the addition of liners or inner layers of rubber, plastic or brick. The mechanical problems of attaching inner nozzles, supports and brick require considerable attention that is not an integral part of sizing the equipment. Figures 9-2A-C show a typical large steel brick-lined-membrane lined tower with corbeled brick support locations. In these towers, temperature and/or corrosive conditions usually dictate the internal lining, and the selection of the proper acid- (or alkali-) proof cements. [Pg.234]

Materials selection process can be depicted in terms of Figure 1.40. Materials selection involves many factors that have to be optimized for a particular application. The foremost consideration is the cost of the material and its applicability in the environmental conditions so that integrity can be maintained during the lifetime of the equipment. When the material of construction is metallic in nature, the chemical composition and the mechanical properties of the metal are significant. Some of the important mechanical properties are hardness, creep, fatigue, stiffness, compression, shear, impact, tensile strength and wear. [Pg.63]

The 2" phase (2006-2009) R D activities undertake a SI process optimization and the performance tests of various chemical reactors selected for the SI cycle. The 2" phase research covers a dynamic code development for the SI process, a construction of a lab. scale( l 000 NL/h) SI process, and integrated operations of the process at prototypical pressures. On the other hand, conceptual and basic designs of a pilot scale( 100 Nm /li) SI process and its equipment will also be carried out according to the optimized process established from the theoretical evaluation using a commercial-base computer code and the experiences of the lab. scale construction and operations. Preliminary performance tests of the equipment, mechanical devices, and accessories for the pilot scale SI process should be carried out to obtain the design basis. Not only the several catalysts based on non-noble metals required for section II in the SI cycle but also a membrane for the separation of the hydrogen required for section III will be developed during the 2" phase research period. [Pg.105]
