While this recommendation wiU have a longterm effect of discouraging innovation, it nonetheless will meet the goal of minimizing validation effort without compromise of quality or regulatory acceptance. All things being equal, select software that is prevalidated or in wide use. 

Acquisition cost of the system itself can be significant, but it represents, in many cases, only a relatively small percent of the total system cost over time. Many factors in addition to the acquisition cost of the system need to be considered, such as the costs of software updates, hardware maintenance, service contracts, and claims processing (Lewis, Albrant, and Hagel, 2002). Table 6-2 provides a checklist of items that a pharmacy should consider when selecting software and software vendors (Felkey and Fox, 2003b).

Many thousands of descriptor types have been developed over the years of chemical research. This short review is not intended to summarize these efforts in detail. Todeschini and Consonni have already provided a reference book for this purpose. Commercial and academic software for generating molecular descriptors has proliferated over the recent years. Using the selected software, fit the parameters of a line (fluorescence = slope t + intercept). The slope that best fits the data is proportional to the rate of substrate hydrolysis in that well. The value obtained for the slope will have units of fluo-rescence/time (e.g., fluorescence U/s). With these innovations software developers can virtualize the software components, certify them with digital signature, and publish the virtualized software in a shared library, as opposed to installing the software on a designated system. This solution framework allows the end-users to search for the software of their interest in a service-oriented manner and to launch the selected software to a system of choice on demand. 

Most organizations have hardware requirements that must be followed when selecting software. Therefore, the purchase of any software must be influenced by the hardware requirements of the organization and the flexibility and limitations of the simulation software. The compatibility of the software with the hardware already in place, file sharing capability between machines and facilities, and the capability to support the output devices already in place need to be considered.
