SELECTED READING LIST

When the Second Edition appeared in 1980, I wrote an Introduction ( Symbols of Trouble ) that dealt almost entirely with the Folk Devils part of the book s title (the Mods and Rockers), especially the developments in subcultural theories of delinquency associated with the Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies. In this Introduction to the Third Edition, I deal only with the Moral Panics part of the title reviewing uses and criticisms of the concept over the last thirty years. A selected reading list can be found on pages 241-8.

The isotope effect was first modeled using the ONIOM multi layer approach developed by Morokuma and coworkers (reading list). In this method a part of the whole system is selected for detailed quantum mechanical modeling and designated model while the whole system is called real . The total energy of (Eoniom) is given by Equation 11.87... 

The story begins in this chapter with the clusters of simplest geometric and electronic structure. These are clusters of p-block elements with defined stoichiometry and structure in which the cluster surface-atom valences are terminated with ligands. The large number known provide the factual base from which clever people have derived models that connect atomic composition with structure. In turn, these p-block models provide a foundation on which to build an understanding of more complex clusters such as condensed clusters, bare clusters and transition-metal clusters. A more comprehensive account of the structural chemistry will be found in older books and reviews, a selection of which will be found in the reading list at the end of each chapter. 

In addition, there are numerous toxicology textbooks that address these chemicals in great detail. The following is a list of some selective readings ... 

The discussion that follows is necessarily selective and is pitched at a simplistic level. Although in this section we derive the number of vibrational modes for some simple molecules, for more complicated species it is necessary to use character tables. The reading list at the end of the chapter gives sources of detailed discussions of the relationship between group theory and normal modes of vibration. 

Studies of kinetic-isotope effects have also provided valuable information about the mechanisms of reactions, and have been very helpful in elucidating biological mechanisms. Unfortunately, thje theory is somewhat complicated, and there are a few pitfalls. Only a very general and brief outline can be given here. For further details, with special reference to biological mechanisms, the reader is referred to the book by Laidler and Bunting listed in Selected Reading at the end of this chapter. 

The availability of microprocessor control of the reactor system greatly improves the speed and accuracy with kinetic measurements can be made, and the number of levels of the variables that can be used. The better quality permits a more rigorous comparison between alternate rate expressions, and increases the reliability of the derived constants for that selected. These advantages have been exploited in extensive studies (see Further Reading list) of the hydrogenolysis of the lower alkanes on standard platinum catalysts,as the following examples will illustrate. 

Clearly, this could only be a small, selective list. But two ingredients are common to all activities listed a laser source and a spectroscopic technique. Therefore, by and large, laser spectroscopy is a cornerstone of many aspects in laser chemistry, and hence it is only appropriate to introduce some of the most common techniques. Of course, this cannot be done exhaustively. For a deeper understanding and more extensive details of some specific techniques the reader is referred to specialist books referenced in the Further Reading list to this Part 2. 

For safety generalists who take an interest in system safety concepts, the following reading list is offered from which selections can be made. 

The technical information programmes, products and services of the US AEC are described in a booklet Technical Information Services of the US AEC, issued as TID-485. What s Available in the Atomic Energy Literature, (TID-4500), is a lucid account of imclassiiied information on atomic energy research with an explanation of how to locate, use and obtain it. Another useful publication of the Commission is Selected Readings on Atomic pjiergy which is a list of books, periodicals and reports from all soiux es in classified order. 

This list provides selected reading sources for the sections of the handbook chosen from books and online resources that the authors have found helpful. It does not give an exhaustive list of the many books, journal articles and literally hundreds of website pages used when the handbook was being compiled. The literature on terrorism, terrorist groups and the war on terror can be remarkably alarmist and is often coloured by entrenched political views. It should be read with considerable circumspection. 

If the query provides thousands of hits, the analyze features are particularly advantageous. One method is to analyze the results by any of the criteria that arc listed, c.g., by language (default), author names, journals, puhlication year, and so on. If one specification is selected and the choice is modified, the hit list will be updated. A more specific analysis is available with the Refine" option. where the user has the opportunity to choose one of eight criteria (including the search topics above) with further individual input. Several refinements of the hit list can reduce the result to a concise list of literature. To read the abstract of an article, the microscope button (to the right of the citation) has to be pressed (Figure 5-15). 

Bioinformatics is a relatively new discipline that is concerned with the collection, organisatic and analysis of biological data. It is beyond our scope to provide a comprehensive overvie of this discipline a few textbooks and reviews that serve this purpose are now available (s the suggestions for further reading). However, we will discuss some of the main rnethoc that are particularly useful when trying to predict the three-dimensional structure and fum tion of a protein. To help with this. Appendix 10.1 contains a limited selection of some of tf common abbreviations and acronyms used in bioinformatics and Appendix 10.2 lists sorr of the most widely used databases and other resources. 

Although you can investigate many research problems after reading the//yperC/zem Reference Manual HyperChem Computational Chemistry, you may also need information from textbooks and current journals. The following list of selected texts can supply the background necessary for understanding the calculations in HyperChem. 

Few potentiometric biosensors are commercially available. As shown in Figures 11.16 and 11.17, however, available ion-selective and gas-sensing electrodes may be easily converted into biosensors. Several representative examples are described in Table 11.5, and additional examples can be found in several reviews listed in the suggested readings at the end of the chapter.
