The most common secondary sign is a characteristic bone bruise pattern, seen in up to 80 % of ACL tears [26]. The pivot shift mechanism creates an impact between LFC and the posterior LTP, which shows an increased signal on T2-weighted images (Fig. 12.4B). These bone bruises evolve over time following the occurrence of the acute injury and resolve after varying periods of time. Previous studies show that bone bruises are seen within 4-6 weeks after ACL injury [16,26]. However, it should be noted that the presence of the translational bone marrow edema pattern created by the pivot shift is indicative of recent tibial translation, but not necessarily of the presence of an acute ACL injury, as these injuries may also be seen in cases... [Pg.144]

Posterior cruciate ligament injuries (PCL), as in adults, are less common than ACL injuries. In infants and children, it must he remembered that the PCL lies in a more horizontal position than in adults and this must not be confused with injury. Secondary signs of a PCL tear include posterior suhluxation of the tibia, associated tears of the ACL, meniscal tears and avulsion of the tibial insertion (Ross and Chesterman 1986). [Pg.221]

The interaction of an electrolyte with an adsorbent may take one of several forms. Several of these are discussed, albeit briefly, in what follows. The electrolyte may be adsorbed in toto, in which case the situation is similar to that for molecular adsorption. It is more often true, however, that ions of one sign are held more strongly, with those of the opposite sign forming a diffuse or secondary layer. The surface may be polar, with a potential l/, so that primary adsorption can be treated in terms of the Stem model (Section V-3), or the adsorption of interest may involve exchange of ions in the diffuse layer. [Pg.412]

Large quantities of secondary cellulose acetate are used worldwide in the manufacture of filter material for cigarettes. Because of its excellent clarity and ease of processing, cellulose acetate film is widely used in display packaging and extmded plastic film for decorative signs (see Packaging materials). Injection-molded plastics of cellulose acetate are used in toothbmsh handles, computer bmshes, and a large variety of other appHcations (7). [Pg.259]

When an antibiotic is ordered for die prevention of a secondary infection (prophylaxis), the nurse observes die patient for signs and symptoms that may indicate die beginning of an infection despite the prophylactic use of die antibiotic. If signs and symptoms of an infection occur, the nurse must report them to the primary health care provider. [Pg.87]

Signs and symptoms of sympathetic nervous system activity are invariably found in MH. Levels of catecholamines are markedly increased in MH. Whether activation of the sympathetic nervous system is a primary or a secondary response in the syndrome has not been fully elucidated. Gronert reported that stress-induced sympathetic hyperactivity can initiate a malignant hyperthermic episode in susceptible swine without a triggering agent. Stress-induced MH in humans has been inferred because susceptible families have been shown to have an increased incidence of sudden death. Gronert s reasons that activation of the sympathetic... [Pg.402]
