Sea onion

Types of Cardiac Glycoside. Three groups of plants produce cardenolides the Digitalis species, growing in temperate climates the Strophanthus species, of tropical provenance and Scilla (sea onion or squill), a Mediterranean plant. 

BULBUS BULBI — Probably the Sea-Onion or Sea-Leek. Officinal Squill. 

PROP Sea onion bulbs contain a potent concentration of scilliroside, a glycoside bearing a close chemical resemblance to the Scillarens. 

Scills Syrupus (syrup of squills) From the sea onion (Urginea martima), used as an expectorant, diuretic, and emetic purgative. Its most common use was in the treatment of chronic bronchitis. Beasley gives more than thirty different prescriptions. 

Systems like the upper layer of ethyl acetate-pyiidine-water (50 + 10 + 40) are also suitable for separation of cardiac glycosides on silica gel, as Steinsggeb and Vah bbb Walt [163] have been able to show with the constituents of the white and red sea onion (Urginea maritima var.). Beiohelt and Pitea [140] have used loose layers of silica gel which were deactivated with 25% water or 43% acetic acid-water (1 + 1) benzene-ethanol (60 + 20), saturated with water, served as solvent for separation of various cardenolides (pure substances).

Holotoxin Ai inhibits the RNA biosynthesis in Candida albicans and Saccharomyces carlsbergensis, as indicated by the decrease in incorporation of C-uridine to the acid-insoluble fraction of the cells. Similar results were obtained for glycoside fractions of 14 species of Pacific sea cucumbers [132]. Apparently the inhibition of RNA biosynthesis in Saccharomyces carlsbergensis is related to nucleotide loss from yeast cells after treatment with glycosides. Holotoxin Ai also inhibits biosyntheses of squalene, lanosterol and ergosterol in S. carlsbergensis [133]. Mitosis is arrested and DNA synthesis inhibited in onion root bulbs by crude holothurin [134].
