Wet scrubbers rely on a liquid spray to remove dust particles from a gas stream. They are primarily used to remove gaseous emissions, with particulate control a secondary function. The major types are venturi scrubbers, jet (fume) scrubbers, and spray towers or chambers. Venturi scrubbers consume large quantities of scrubbing liquid (such as water) and electric power and incur high pressure drops. Jet or fume scrubbers rely on the kinetic energy of the liquid stream. The typical removal efficiency of a jet or fume scrubber (for particles 10 g. or less) is lower than that of a venturi scrubber. Spray towers can handle larger gas flows with minimal pressure drop and are therefore often used as precoolers. Because wet scrubbers may contribute to corrosion, removal of water from the effluent gas of the scrubbers may be necessary.

Spray Scrubbers. Spray scrubbers consist of an empty cylindrical chamber in which dust-laden air is contacted with water from spray nozzles, as shown in Figure 20.6(b). The dust-laden air enters the tower near the bottom and passes upward through the water spray. This type of equipment is similar to the spray towers used in mass transfer operations. Proper water distribution can be a problem, so multiple banks of spray nozzles mounted on a manifold produce better air-water contact. The spray knocks down the dust that leaves the bottom of the unit as a dust-water mixture. An entrainment separator is mounted in the upper part of the chamber to reduce the potential spray carryover into the exiting gas stream. 

Wet inertial scrubbers. The inertial principle is used for the separation of dust particles in this type of scrubber. Sprayed layers of small objects or sprayed rods are used. This type of scrubber also includes units, where the stream of purified gas and a pressure difference force the water from the open surface into S-shaped slit, where it is mi, ed with purified gas.

The most common types of wet scrubbers are spray towers, venturi scrubbers, packed bed scrubbers and impingement scrubbers. Spray towers are the simplest, least expensive, however not very efficient, tar separation devices [23].

Utilities have a great deal of flexibility as to how they reduce their sulfur oxide emissions. One way to cut emissions is to use low-sulfur coal, or to remove sulfur from coal before burning it. Sulfur is removed from coal by crushing the coal to a powder and washing it with water, resulting in a 50% sulfur reduction. Another way to cut emissions is by removing the sulfur dioxide from the exhaust. Fhie gas scrubbers can be installed in power plant smokestacks.
