A new class of secondary metabolites tyrolobibenzyls A 36 and B 37 were isolated from Scorzonera humilis (Asteraceae) of Tyrolean origin. Compounds 36 and 37 were shown to possess a unique phenylethylbenzofuran skeleton <00HCA292O>. The structure of the dimeric coumarin 38 was confirmed by an X-ray diffraction study, as well as by a photochemical synthesis from its co-occurring monomer bergapten <00H(53)441>.

Angelica (Apiaceae), Scorzonera hispanka (Asteraceae), Symphytum (Boraginaceae), Beta (Chenopodiaceae), Lonicera (Caprifoliaceae), Asparagus (Liliaceae), Fraxinus (Oleaceae), Abies, Larix (Pinaceae), Citrus (Rutaceae) spp. 

Six bibenzyl glycosides, tyrolobibenzyls A-F, were isolated from Scorzonera humilis (Asteraceae) of tyrolean origin [82-84]. Tyrolobibenzyls C and E (147, 148) are simple bibenzyl glucosides with an acetyl group at C-1, while tyrolobibenzyls A, B, D and F (191-194) possess a unique phenylethyl-benzofuran backbone and represent a new class of natural compounds attributed to group C. 

Nowadays, LC-MS systems have been often applied to identify and quantify stilbenoids, for example, bibenzyls in Scorzonera humilis [84], phenanthrenes of Dendrobium chrysanthum [201], resveratrol oxidative products [257] and stilbenes derivatives [363].

Trigonelline, C7H7O2N, was discovered in the seeds of Trigonella foenum-graecum L. (63) but it has since been found in a wide variety of plants such as the seeds of Pisum satimm L. and Cannabis saliva L. (64) in the seeds of Strophanthus kombe Oliver (65), and in coffee (66, 67) also in the soybean (69), in potatoes (70) and in the tubers of Dahlia variabilis Des. and Scorzonera hispanica L. (73). The content of the base in known coffees is fairly constant (0.228-0.245%) (68). 

Vanillin is found in Styrax species, in clove oil, and in the flowers of black salsify (Scorzonera), Spiraea and potato. In addition, various foodstuffs, such as milk, wine and rice wine contain vanillin. The smell of old, yellowed paper with a high wood content can be attributed to this compound as well. It is also found in smaller concentrations in the woody part of many plants. Vanillin is found in tobacco to a considerable extent, and it is also contained in the bark of the Pon-derosa pine (Pinus ponderosa). [136] Moreover, male bugs of the species Eury-gaster integriceps secrete vanillin as an attractant. [137] The most important vanilla plant is the climbing orchid. Vanilla planifolia, the fruits of which are harvested nine months before ripeness (Fig. 3.32).
