Cannabis saliva

The hemp plant, or cannabis (Cannabis saliva), continues to be the most frequently abused illicit substance in America. The dried leaves and flowering tops of the plant are referred to as marijuana, and it is typically smoked in pipes or rolled as cigarettes. It also may be consumed in baked goods. Hashish is a solid black resinous material obtained from the leaves of the plant and is usually smoked in a pipe. [Pg.416]

Native to Central Asia and long cultivated in Asia, Europe, and China. Now a widespread tropical, temperate, and subarctic cultivar. Cannabis saliva has been cultivated for more than 4500 years for different purposes, such as fiber, oil, or narcotics. The oldest use of hemp is for fiber, and later the seeds were used for culinary purposes. Plants yielding the drug were discovered in India, cultivated for medicinal purposes as early as 900 BC. In medieval times, it was brought to North Africa, where currently it is cultivated exclusively for hashish or kif. [Pg.30]

Cannabinoid receptors include the CB1 receptors (which have a high incidence in the CNS and inhibit adenylyl cyclase, close Ca2+ channels and open K+ channels via Gai) and CB2 receptors (which are present in immune cells and act via Gai proteins to inhibit adenylyl cyclase). CB1 and CB2 receptors bind the endogenous ligand anandamide (arachi-donylethanolamide) as well as A9-tetrahydroc.annabinol from marijuana (Cannabis saliva). A9-Tetrahydroc,annabinol antagonizes the peripheral CB2 receptor but acts as an agonist for the CNS CB1 receptor. The glandular trichomes are the structures in which the cannabis resin is pro-dnced. These can be fonnd on the underside of the leaves, and occasionally on the stems, but are mainly associated with the flower structures, with female plants being particularly rich in such structures. The unicellular trichomes are found all over the plant, but interestingly, only point up the plant. The cystolithic trichomes are found all over the plant and may have oxalic acid crystals visible within their bases. If aU of these trichomes are found together, then the plant material can be definitively identified as Cannabis saliva, since no other plant displays such a combination [5]. However, some plants possess trichomes which may be confused with those present on Cannabis sativa [6, 7] and care should thus be taken in definitive identification. [Pg.57]
