Scoring Procedure

We have found it useful to use three different scoring procedures depending on the nature of the experiment and its objectives. 

Method III is more difficult and complicated than the previous methods, but it supplies the most detailed information on hair length and the kinds and positions of aberrant cells within a hair as well as a record of daily changes that occur during the course of the scoring period. This 

Two scorers are recommended for this scoring procedure. One person scores and dictates to the second member of the team, who enters the information directly on the input sheets. After scoring about ten stamens, they alternate these assignments to reduce fatigue. 

An example of a typical input sheet as used for this method is shown in Fig. 8B, but this sheet may be modified to accommodate appropriate data if method I or TI is used. The example shown here was designed to accommodate two hairs on a single line, and each hair could have a maximum length of 28 cells. In this example, the experiment was done 

Once the stamen hairs are mapped in this fashion, computer programs can be devised to analyze the data as required by the experimenter.

It should be clear from the above discussion that the LIE method is thus fundamentally different from other typical molecular mechanics based scoring procedures that are designed to evaluate all separate contributions to the binding enthalpy or free energy explicitly. That is, such methods, e.g. Refs. 23-25, express the binding energy as something like... 

Another approach that we took towards the top 50 was to examine what the ITC had done with these substances. We found that of the 50 substances only 18 survived the screening process used by the ITC to narrow down the total number of substances examined. Each of these 18 was scored, using the ITC scoring procedures, and were then considered by the committee. Four have been recommended for priority testing ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, toluene and xylene.

Based on standardized scoring procedures (Rechtschaffen and Kales 1968), the entire sleep period is internally characterized as either rapid eye movement (REM) sleep or non-REM sleep, the latter including stages 1, 2, 3, and 4. Furthermore, stages 3 and 4 form the so-called slow-wave sleep (SWS). In this section, we describe the sleep stage characteristics of depression. 

The sex-linked recessive-lethal test is a highly objective scoring procedure with minimal observer bias. Scoring of a few thousand F2 cultures per day by an adequately trained technician is routine.

A hypothetical reference protein derived from the pattern of human amino acid requirements was proposed as a standard for comparison. Shortcomings have been recognized and progress has been made in accurately evaluating human amino acid requirements. Equally critical for success is the ability to obtain precise measurements of amino acid content in the protein sources. Finally, to improve on accuracy of scoring procedures, chemically determined amino acid contents may have to be corrected for digestibility or biological availability. 

For new or novel products or processes, digestibility values must be determined. However, established digestibility values of well-defined foods may be taken from a published data base for use in the amino acid scoring procedure. A database should be established for all raw and processed products.

The mean and standard deviation generally are not part of the important aspects of the data and may obscure the issue and complicate the networks task. A good method for removing both is the Z-score procedure, which involves subtracting the mean and dividing by the standard deviation. This removes all effects of offset and measurement scale. A simple linear mapping can be used to normalize the Z-scores to the bounds of the transfer function.

A prime way to increase perceptions of control over injuries is to develop scoring procedures for safety achievements, rather than focusing on the number of reported injuries as a measure of success. This puts the emphasis on measuring process activities that can lead to loss control or injury prevention as detailed in Chapter 18.
