School children

After completion of the award ceremony in the Concert Hall we were driven to the city hall for the Nobel banquet. By this time it was a bitterly cold, windy evening. The courtyard of the city hall was lighted by the torches of hundreds of school children lining it. It was a most impressive sight, but we felt sorry for the children, who must have braved the weather for a long while.

Although more people are being fed than ever before, there are also more malnourished humans than ever before. Thus, more than 1.6 billion of the 5.3 billion people living today are malnourished and do not have access to adequate supplies of food (3), Clearly, a malnourished person cannot lead a fully productive life. The plight of these people is more serious than just a lack of adequate food, for many are ill with disease and/or carry heavy loads of parasites. For example, a survey of school children in Kwale District, Kenya showed that 96% were infected with hookworms, 50% with roundworms, 95% with whipworms, and 40% with schistosomiasis...

The studies in Sr. Macedonia, Yugoslavia, were only concerned with the evaluation of the usefulness of the microchromatographic procedure for the determination of Hb-A2 and thus for the detection of the 3-thalassemia heterozygote. Other investigators have also found that parameters of neurobehavioral function are associated with tooth lead levels.
