The CSTR-recycle in Figure 4.1 has limitations and many are associated with mass transfer and time-scale issues. A CSTR contacting pattern is not perfect as input to Eq. (2). Each spectrometer associated with Figure 4.1 has its limitations, and many are associated with the class of species detectable and the sensitivity.

IMaterials and Scaling Issues. Two aspects of the basically simple desalination process require special attention. One is the high corrosivity of seawater, especially pronounced in the higher temperature distillation processes, which requires the use of corrosion-resistant, and therefore expensive, materials. Typical materials in use are copper—nickel alloys, stainless steel, titanium, and, at lower temperatures, fiber-reinforced polymers and special concrete compositions (39). It is noteworthy that in quest of a lower initial cost, the use of inadequate materials of constmction in many locations combined with poor operation by virtually untrained hands led to rapid deterioration and failure of plants long before their estimated design life. Adequate experience suggests by now how to avoid such failures. The other aspect is scale formation (40,41), discussed in mote detail below. 

It bears repeating that the climate change problem is one that is expandable in terms of both time and space, and it is one that requires independent action along a spectrum of independent bodies. In working towards a solution to the problem, viewed as a global scale issue, the key challenge worldwide is to implement environmental energy measures from a local level.

Some examples of the big issues being addressed by noble gases are as follows and I have deliberately posed these as major unresolved questions that only exist because noble gas geochemistry has opened windows through which to view large-scale issues and processes that otherwise would be obscure. (1) Is the presolar noble gas component present in a tiny fraction of submicroscopic meteoritic C or is it ubiquitously distributed ... 

Not only are stresses altered, but fabric is also massively and irreversibly changed. The blocky nature of the fractured shale creates a scale issue larger diameter boreholes are more likely to experience sloughing of the shale chunks (Fig 3). 

The last sections describe membrane application issues in water treatment. The processes have been compared in terms of their volume of application and recent ffowth. This is obviously linked to treatment cost, an issue which will also be addressed hriefy. Problems which have arisen in previous pilot plant orfull scale studies will he part of the fouling studies in this thesis, where effects can he investigated on a smaller scale. Issues of concentrate disposal or treatment and membrane integrity are not discussed in this review. The concluding remarks address research needs and plans for this project. 

Other major limitations are related to scaling issues due to distorted or poor inlet flow distribution nonidentical membrane pore size distribution, and uneven membrane thickness (Zhou and Tressel, 2006).

Observations made by scientists over the years provided additional momentum in the same direction. The physical process whose study was perhaps most influential in stimulating interest in nowhere-differentiable functions is Brownian motion, described in Section 2.2.5. Besides Brownian motion, several other physical processes contributed to foster interest in nowhere-differentiable functions. A few years after Wiener s work, Dedebant and Wehrld [51] studied a number of scale issues arising in meteorology and concluded that many meteorological processes, observed at a very small scale, are like the continuous, nondifferentiable functions that seemed forever to belong to the realm of speculative mathematicians [51 (p. 83)].
