Saws, portable

The war itself also drove the development of improved and miniaturised electronic components for creating oscillators and amplifiers and, ultimately, semiconductors, which made practical the electronic systems needed in portable eddy current test instruments. The refinement of those systems continues to the present day and advances continue to be triggered by performance improvements of components and systems. In the same way that today s pocket calculator outperforms the large, hot room full of intercormected thermionic valves that I first saw in the 50 s, so it is with eddy current instrumentation. Today s handheld eddy current inspection instrument is a powerful tool which has the capability needed in a crack detector, corrosion detector, metal sorter, conductivity meter, coating thickness meter and so on. [Pg.273]

In some topics Nikolai Emanuel was not able to show persistence and win the battle. Nikolai Emanuel liked to drive his Volga . And once he was stopped by a GAI3 officer by the subway station, Leninskie Gory . Nikolai Emanuel went out of his car and began to explain what happened, and the officer was unmerciful and demanded the penalty. Luckily, one of Nikolai Emanuel s employees, Leva Aramovich Piruzyan, drove by (now he is an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences). He saw that Nikolai Emanuel was in trouble and needed help. Now almost everyone has a mobile phone, but those days only KGB officers and other high-ranked officials had portable phones. Leva Piruzyan has taken an... [Pg.7]

The Fuel Sniffer Sensor The Fuel Sniffer is a portable fuel dilution meter that can be used in the laboratory or in the field to provide rapid measurements of fuel contamination in engine oil. Developed in collaboration with the US navy, the Fuel Sniffer employs a surface acoustic wave (SAW) vapour microsensor to measure the concentration of distillate fuel in used diesel lubricating oil samples. The sensor quantifies the absorbed hydrocarbons by a change in frequency. The instrument samples the head space in the sample bottle and calculates the percent of fuel... [Pg.485]

Microsensor Systems, Inc. (Fairfax, VA) offers SAW devices and coatings for organophosphorus compounds, aromatic hydrocarbons, water vapor, and others. A four-sensor array consisting of four 158 MHz dual-delay-line oscillators and a portable gas chromatograph with an SAW detector are also available. [Pg.488]

Another example of a quasi-electronic nose is the use of a reconfigured GC column. One commercial example is the z-Nose which is a portable instrument based upon a short Im GC column with an uncoated SAW detector. The instrument is calibrated using compounds similar to the target analyte and shows some promise in detecting explosives [7]. [Pg.9]

Organic polymers and optical fibres [17] have been previously used to detect vapours of explosive analytes [18,19]. The transduction methods include absorption, fluorescence, conductivity, etc [16]. Such simple techniques are promising, because they can be incorporated into inexpensive and portable microelectronic devices. For example, a chemically selective silicone polymer layer on a SAW (surface acoustic wave) device has been shown to provide efficient detection for the nitroaromatic compounds [20]. The fluorescence of pentiptycene conjugated polymers [21,22] and... [Pg.41]

The Model 4300 zNose is a portable GC that can detect and measure levels of many types of vapours, toxins, explosives, narcotics and other compounds. It is the first GC to be based on surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology. The battery pack allows field operation for six hours. Analysis time is between 1-60 seconds and sensitivity is low ppb for most compounds with a precision of 5 % RSD. The combined weight of the sampler, chassis and charger is 14.6 kg. [Pg.214]

Magnesium alloys are the lightest of the casting metals, being about 60% as dense as aluminium alloy, and are used where weight saving is important, e.g. for portable saws, cameras, projectors and automobile components including specialised car wheels. The specification of these alloys is contained in BS EN 1753. [Pg.305]

Isolation and Double Insulation Another form of physical control is separating energized portions of electrical equipment from those parts people can contact This is isolation. Several means can accomplish isolation. Covering conductors with nonconductive materials keeps people from contacting them. This is insulation. Another method is to provide two layers of enclosure for energized parts. At least one of the layers must be nonconductive and the nonconductive layer must separate a user from possible contact with any energized part. This is double insulation. Most portable power tools (drills, saws, etc.) have internal parts that cannot energize any portion of the external surface. [Pg.146]

Many power tools have switches that shut off power to the tool when the operator releases the switch. Depressing the switch turns the tool on. Releasing the switch turns it off. Portable drills, saws, hedge trimmers, grinders and other power tools have such controls. The operator must depress the switch continuously during use. If the operator leaves the operator position or lets go of the control, the tool stops. There is little chance of injury to the operator. [Pg.172]

Another hazard is sharp objects and equipment. Examples are burrs and sharp edges on sheared sheet metal or metal objects. Another example is use of sharp knives and cutting tools. Other examples are axes and portable saws, such as chainsaws. Protective clothing, such as gloves, chaps and other clothing must be tough and resist cuts and tears. [Pg.404]

The spindle end, nut, and outer flange may be exposed on machines designed as portable saws. [Pg.408]
