Decontamination of potable water of the Dnieper river by using a combination of dust-like clinoptilolite and aluminum sulfate followed by filtration through clinoptilolite layers led to a drastic decrease of radioactivity [66, 67]. In addition, filters of clinoptilolite tuffs were suggested to extract radionucleides from the drainage water of the encapsulated Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Filtration reduced Cs by 95% and Sr by 50-60%. After one year the filters carrying a radioactivity of lO Ci/kg were exchanged and buried [66]. [Pg.21]

As an alternative to the rotary filter drum, the filter may be stretched into a horizontal continuous belt, around two rotating drums, as shown in the diagram in Figure 12 of a Florentine filter from a Tirtiaux plant. Filtration takes place on the upper, horizontal surface of the belt, which has a vacuum chamber beneath it. In the diagram shown, the first portion of the filter belt, which in this case is perforated stainless steel, allows for any crystal fines to be recycled so they do not contaminate the olein fraction. [Pg.426]

Hybrid Crystallization/Adsorption Process. In 1994, IFP and Chevron announced the development of a hybrid process that reportedly combines the best features of adsorption and crystallization (59,99). In this option of the Eluxyl process, the adsorbent bed is used to initially produce PX of 90—95% purity. The PX product from the adsorption section is then further purified in a small single-stage crystallizer and the filtrate is recycled back to the adsorption section. It is reported that ultrahigh (99.9+%) purity PX can be produced easily and economically with this scheme for both retrofits of existing crystallization units as well as grass-roots units. A demonstration plant was built at Chevron s Pascagoula refinery in 1994. [Pg.420]

The KDF filter was first tested in prototype on a coal mine in northern Germany. It was installed in parallel with existing vacuum filters and it produced filter cakes consistendy lower in moisture content by 5 to 7% than the vacuum filters. Two production models have been installed and operated on a coal mine in Belgium. The filter is controlled by a specially developed computer system this consists of two computers, one monitoring the function of the filter and all of the detection devices installed, and the other controlling the filtration process. The system allows optimization of the performance, automatic start-up or shut-down, and can be integrated into the control system of the whole coal washing plant. [Pg.406]

PVDF-based microporous filters are in use at wineries, dairies, and electrocoating plants, as well as in water purification, biochemistry, and medical devices. Recently developed nanoselective filtration using PVDF membranes is 10 times more effective than conventional ultrafiltration (UF) for removing vimses from protein products of human or animal cell fermentations (218). PVDF protein-sequencing membranes are suitable for electroblotting procedures in protein research, or for analyzing the phosphoamino content in proteins under acidic and basic conditions or in solvents (219). [Pg.389]

Psyllium Seed Gum. PsyUium seed gum [8036-16-9] is derived from plants of the genus Plantago several species of which are used as commercial sources. However, most current production is from Plantago ovata grown in India. The gum is located in the coat which is removed by cracking. The gum is then extracted with boiling water and separated from the insoluble residue by filtration. It consists of mixtures of both neutral and acidic polysaccharides, the composition of which is species dependent (66). [Pg.435]

The OSHA limits, regulations, and recommendations apply to in-plant air quaUty. Improperly filtered exhaust air may cause a plant to be in violation of the EPA standard, therefore these data should not be confused with the EPA limit for airborne lead, 1.5 fig lead/m, measured over a calendar quarter, which pertains to the exterior plant environment and emissions. The installation and proper maintenance of exhaust filtration systems enables most plants to comply with the EPA limits for airborne lead (see Lead compounds, industrial toxicology). [Pg.73]

Problems of removal of mercury from aqueous effluents are more comphcated in plants that manufacture a variety of inorganic and organic mercury compounds it is generally best to separate the effluent streams of inorganic and organic mercurials. When phenyhnercuric acetate is precipitated from its solution in acetic acid by addition of water, the filtrate is collected and reused for the next precipitation. This type of recycling is necessary not only for economic reasons but also to minimise recovery operations. [Pg.117]

Low Level Waste Treatment. Methods of treatment for radioactive wastes produced in a nuclear power plant include (/) evaporation (qv) of cooling water to yield radioactive sludges, (2) filtration (qv) using ion-exchange (qv) resins, (J) incineration with the release of combustion gases through filters while retaining the radioactively contaminated ashes (see Incinerators), (4) compaction by presses, and (5) solidification in cement (qv) or asphalt (qv) within metal containers. [Pg.228]
