Sample information, gathering

This section will look at formation and fluid data gathering before significant amounts of fluid have been produced hence describing how the static reservoir is sampled. Data gathered prior to production provides vital information, used to predict reservoir behaviour under dynamic conditions. Without this baseline data no meaningful reservoir simulation can be carried out. The other major benefit of data gathered at initial reservoir conditions is that pressure and fluid distribution are in equilibrium this is usuaily not the case once production commences. Data gathered at initial conditions is therefore not complicated... 

Information gathering As you report your results to the museum curator, she decides that there is nothing terribly unique about naphthalene dissolved in kerosene. She asks you to dispose of the sample according to your university protocols and she will display the empty bottle in the museum. 

The difference of temperature between the sample under estimation and a thermally-inert reference material is continuously recorded as a function of furnace temperature in differential thermal analysis (DTA). In actual practice both TGA and DTA are regarded as complementary techniques whereby information gathered by the usage of one approach is invariably supplemented and enhanced by the application of the other method. The range of phenomena measurable during a DTA-run is found to be much larger than in a TGA-run.

For the silica aerogel we examined, the permeability and its pressure dependence thus determined is consistent with pore size information gathered independently. Appearance of a crack in the sample could be detected as an apparent 30% jump in the permeability.

It is the versatility of FIA that is the decisive factor behind the widespread application of the technique. Replacement of the established practice of homogeneous mixing by the exploitation of concentration gradients, well defined in time and space, has provided a new approach to solution handling and information gathering on chemical systems. It allows the use of numerous detectors, incorporation of a variety of separation techniques, and miniaturization of the apparatus so that serial assays may be performed in microscale, on small sample volumes and with limited reagent consumption. Such an enclosed, miniaturized automated instrumental technique contributes to improvement of the working environment. 

Wesolowski and coworkers [22] have used another approach to handling data from lubricating oils, namely the application of chemometric analysis. TG and DTG data from a variety of oil samples were gathered and utilized in a matrix analysis to determine which factors provide information related to oil... 

As the tip is scanned over the sample, or the sample is scanned under the tip, forces between the tip and the sample surface cause spatial deflections and oscillations of the cantilever. The key information gathered in AFM comes with measuring those deflections, quantified by means of an optical lever system, coupled with a position-sensitive photodiode (Marinello et al. 2009).
