Saltpeter

Gr. iodes, violet) Discovered by Courtois in 1811, Iodine, a halogen, occurs sparingly in the form of iodides in sea water from which it is assimilated by seaweeds, in Chilean saltpeter and nitrate-bearing earth, known as caliche in brines from old sea deposits, and in brackish waters from oil and salt wells. [Pg.122]

Iodine was discovered by Curtois in 1811—1812, when he observed violet vapors rising upon heating saltpeter pots (1). Following its discovery and exarnination, the new element was named iode in French after the Greek word ioeides meaning violet-colored. The Fnglish term iodine comes from the same root (2). [Pg.358]

Sodium nitrate nitrate [7631-99-4] NaNO, is found in naturally occurring deposits associated with sodium chloride, sodium sulfate, potassium chloride, potassium nitrate, magnesium chloride, and other salts. Accumulations of sodium nitrate have been reported in several countries, but the only ones being commercially exploited are the unique nitrate-rich deposits in Chile, South America. Natural sodium nitrate is also referred to as Chilean saltpeter or Chilean nitrate. [Pg.192]

Nitric acid, or aqua fortis as it was called in medieval times, has been known and used by mankind for centuries. At first, it was produced by heating a mixture of sodium nitrate (Chile saltpeter) and sulfuric acid. The product obtained was sodium hydrogen sulfate, and the nitric acid vapors escaping during this process were condensed ... [Pg.85]

Nitric acid was generated in this manner prior to the year 1900, and its production depended on the availability of Chile saltpeter. The increasing importance of nitrogen compounds as a fertilizer rendered this method inadequate to satisfy the escalating demand. In 1903, the... [Pg.85]
