Deanna L. Pickel joined the research staff at the Center for Nanophase Materials Science at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in July 2007. Her research interests are in the precise synthesis and characterization of well-defined materials, both in functionality and in architecture, to better understand the relationship between molecular structure and self-assembly at the nanoscale. In particular, she is interested in the use of MALDI-TOF MS to better understand the mechanism of various polymerization and functionalization chemistries. Deanna received her BS in chemistry and BA in mathematics in 1999 from Saint Mary s College in Notre Dame, IN, and PhD in 2003 from the University of Akron in polymer science under professor Roderic Quirk. Her doctoral research focused on the anionic synthesis and characterization of end functional polymers. She then joined Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport, TN, where she worked on various process improvement projects and was a project leader for work on the weatherability of copolyesters. She moved to the Center for Nanophase Materials Science in July 2007, where she is a member of the Maaomolecular Nanomaterials Group. She is the recipient of the 2002 Eastman Chemical Company Fellowship, as well as a finalist in the 2002 Id Student Award in Applied Polymer Science.

The second famous discovery happened in 1928 when Dr. Alexander Fleming, a bacteriologist at London s Saint Mary s Hospital, found that a magic mold resisted the action of bacteria. He named the mold penicillin. It was not until 1940 that penicillin was developed into a therapeutic agent by Oxford University scientists Howard Florey and Ernest Chain. Unfortunately, an insufficient supply of penicillin existed until the beginning of World War II, when several U.S.-based companies purified and mass produced penicillin to treat the wounds of U.S. soldiers on the battlefield. A long series of new antibiotics followed in the 1950s, known as the decade of antibiotics. ... 

Martha Mary Daas is an Associate Professor of Spanish at Old Dominion University. Her articles on medieval literature focus on female saints and the power of virginity, but she has pubhshed on topics as diverse as parody in the literature of the Middle Ages and rehgion as portrayed in the television show South Park. Her first book. The Politics of Salvation Gonzalo de Berceo s Re-invention of the Marian Myth will be out in December 2010. She is currently at work on a second book examining popular culture in the Spanish Middle Ages.
