The selective intramolecular arene C-H/olefin coupling reaction (Murai reaction) represents one of the most important discoveries in catalytic C-H functionalization chemistry (Equation (94)). 

However, there still remain limitations to C-H functionalization chemistry in order to achieve the goal of high turnover, selective, clean catalysis employing mild conditions. It is hoped that these issues will be addressed and at least some of the obstacles will be overcome in the next decade.

In addition to Grignard chemistry and hydrogermylation, for which analogs also exist for silicon, there is another type of functionalization chemistry that has been carried out on germanium surfaces that of alkanethiol attachment to H-terminated Ge. Alkanethiols are well known for their use in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold surfaces. 

The functionalization chemistry of the CDs has been extensively developed at this time.17 Synthetic methodology is available to either monofunctionalize or perfunc-tionalize either the primary or secondary hydroxyl portal of these hosts. Derivatiza-tion is still a pending subject in the chemistry of cucurbit[n]uril hosts. Kim and coworkers have reported a procedure that allows the equatorial functionalization of the periphery of CB6, but the same procedure is highly inefficient with either CB7 or CB8.18 Further developments in this area may be of great significance to extend the range of applications of this host family. 

Because of their biocompatibility, chemical stability, high thermal and electrical conductivity, sorption ability, tuneable surfaces area, pore-size distribution and straightforward functionalization chemistry, porous carbons have found application in diverse topical areas such as sensors, fuel cells, hydrogen storage, and sorption.39 11 One particular property that distinguishes porous carbon from porous silica materials is the electrical conductivity of the former that has no counterpart in siliceous-based scaffoldings. This feature opens the route for certain applications... 

The catalytically active entities that NRPSs are composed of can be classified as being essential to all NRPSs or being responsible for special modifications. Only when a set of domains correctly acts in appropriate order, the designated product can be synthesized (3) (Fig. 3). The function, chemistry, and interactions of these domains are discussed in the following section (Fig. 4).
