Safety perception percentages

Quality of health and safety meetings held, determined by employee perception Percentage of incident investigations completed within a prescribed period of time Percentage of action items from audits or investigations corrected within an allotted time Number of one-on-one safety contacts between employees Percentage of safe behaviors within a group of miners or workers Number of MSHA/OSHA citations per inspector day... 

For example, a correlation of 0.30 between the results of a safety perception survey and other measures of safety, such as employees frequency of coaching sessions completed or percentages of at-risk behavior per observation period, sounds good until you realize that only 9 percent of the variance in one measurement device could be accounted for by the other (0.30 = 0.09 or 9 percent). In this case, 91 percent of the variance in people s safety perception scores could not be explained by the other estimate of a person s safety. 

Rescue and safety workers have also been studied. Nishiwaki et al. (2001) studied 27 male rescue team staff and 30 police officers, 3-45 months after the event. The study subjects showed decreased performance on the digit span test however, no effects on stabilometry and vibration perception threshold were found. Li et al. (2004) followed 27 male firefighters and 25 male police officers three years after the attack for genotoxic effects. They found an elevated frequency of sister chromatid exchanges in lymphocytes of the victims which were related to the percentage of ChE inhibition observed just after the attack.
